I'm from the 80s, so I still use "Dude" Dude almost always refers to a person, either as a name as in "Hey, Dude, check it out!" or as in reference to someone.. as in, "That dude has the weirdest car". However, being my age, I still say "Duuuuuude" which can mean most anything. A huge snowhill "Duuuuuude". A broken glass. "Duuuuuude". I don't know where you're at or your age, but some will never understand that particular word. You kinda had to grow up into and with it. It's that way with a lot of slang.

First time I heard the word was in the '70s' when David Bowie (yep, I'm old) wrote a song called 'All the Young Dudes' which may have been about folk who were desperately trying to be 'cool'.

These days, you don't hear real folk say this. If anyone says this word, regard them with DEEP suspicion!

"dude" in the english language is just a word that mostly guys use with their guy friends. When i go up to one of my homies its all like "Hey dude, whats up?" , or when i go up to a group of my homies its all like "'sup dudes?"
so it is an informal way of saying friend.

"Dude, what's up?"

"Where're ya going dude?"

It's used instead of the name in casusal conversation. Or in place of Man, Like "I was talking to this dude yesterday".

Well, I think it's used instead of "friend", or "pal", "mate". or for example, like "I know this dude who repairs tvs" (I know this guy or man, who repairs tvs) Something like that.
Are you British or something???
