I had braces for five years straight so I'm sure I can help you out here ;)
a) my mouth hurt for about a week and a half, but that can be different for everyone. i reccomend taking motrin or some kind of pain reliever before you get them on. keep taking the meds till it stops hurting. its not the best feeling in the world, but it soon dissapates.
b) honestly? yes. you will be limited to soft foods for a bit. but thats alright, there are alot of yummy soft foods out there. ice-cream will become a good friend of yours ;)
c) not everyone does, but majority of people do, whether its to correct a bite or align teeth. i had to wear them to correct my overbite. they're not the most fun and they occasionally snap if you open your mouth too wide >_< but not everyone needs them, thats something you can ask your dentist. You usually dont get rubber bands for awhile so I wouldnt worry about that right now.
d) i really didnt hate them at all. yes it was a hassle to brush my teeth all the time. i brushed them after every lunch during school. and they can cut the inside of your cheeks and lips if you're not careful, but all in all they're not horrible.
i really would avoid chewing gum. if you're an addict, limit yourself to a few pieces a week. it's not good for the braces, and not to mention, a hastle to try and get out of your braces if you get it stuck.
you might want to thing about getting a water pick. its a little machine that pressurizes water and shoots out of a little tube. it makes it easier to clean your teeth waaaay back there. (plus: they're kinda fun :P )
one fun thing i liked was changing the color of the bands. i could get them to match the season, my fav color, or whatever combo i wanted :) it was always fun to get different colors during each visit
i know when i got my braces off i just wanted them back on because it felt so funny >_< i though my teeth looked huge with out them :P hehehe
but when you DO get your braces off please please please wear your retainer...i regret not wearing mine and mine no longer fits...wear yours religiously when the time comes!
hope this all helps :)
i promise you braces aren't really as horrible as they sound...actually, i found them oddly attractive at times and nobody thought differently of me for having them

i still have braces now but im getting them off in 4 or 5 more months.
a) at the beginning it hurts 4-5 days then as a few months like 5 or 6, the spaces are smaller so it'll only hurt 2-4 days. But dont misunderstand it only hurts if you press something against your teeth
b)Yes it hurts to eat like i said above for a few days but afterwards it gets better and like after a week you cant feel it.
c) yes the rubberbands are what makes your teeth straighter, it shrinks over time making your wire tighten and the teeth lined up.
d) i disliked them at first but now, its good, my teeth are straight and now that there are no gaps it only hurts for a day
Important info: umm the back of the wire will scrap against the inside part of your cheek so that hurts. im not trying to scare you, but its better to expect it. Brushing your teeth after you just got it done hurts a lot, so lightly brush it, but this will take longer to get your teeth cleaned but its better then hurting yourself. Um about the pain if you're wondering, its like having a loose tooth but everyone of them is like that, so it'll hurt if you bit into your food. i had trouble eating when i just got them.
Good luck. There's nothing much to worry about, time flys if you look back.

Hi,
sorry you have to get them. I had mine taken off about 1 year ago. Now to the answers.
a. As soon as you get them begin chewing gum, although it's not good it helps but brush your teeth after wards. If not begin drinking cold drinks or just bits of ice.
b.It will hurt, but by at least doing one of these it will reduce the pain. Otherwise be prepared to cry because it hurts like nothing else.
c.Not everyone but mostly yes, I had to in order to close the gaps between my teeth. Otherwise one would end up looking like an old lady.
d.I use to hate it because i couldn't talk right at the beginning and I couldn't eat what everyone else ate, which meant nothing hard. Only noodles or soups and jello.
Good luck with your new braces, but you can do it. It will be worth it in the end.
