I am having an operation in early January, and am having general anaesthetic. My friend tells me that anaesthesia can be traumatic for the body, and I may lose a few pounds.

I have googled and searched but can't seem to find any info about this. Can anyone on here help?

No you will not lose weight for being placed under general anesthetics. The drugs used to put you under do not have that kind of effects on the body.

I can' t say it would really be a consideration if it was me!

However, I've had general anaesthetic twice and afterwards it was like the worse hangover of my life both times. I felt really sick, hardly slept and threw up anything I ate. So I imagine I did lose weight. But everyone reacts differently to anaesthetic so you might not react at all - people I know had no reaction at all and thought I was weird.

You may have some discomfort from air that remains in your abdomen for a few hours after you wake up. This is usually the worst after effect from laparoscopic surgery. If you're worried about nausea, try not to take pain pills till you are home. Pain meds can make you car sick on the way home. Resist the urge to eat/drink too much for as long as you can... A little toast and tea. Frequently, you'll feel hungry when you get home and eat a full meal, but your gut sleeps for 6 to 8 hours after a general anesthetic. The food will sit in your stomach for several hours and then you'll feel sick. Take a pain pill when you get home, have a few crackers or some toast and tea, and then try to sleep. You'll feel much better when you wake up.

the anaesthetic itself will not affect your weight but if you are ill afterwards i.e. being sick, you may lose weight.

i have had several operations and have always had different effects. one time my face blew up like a hamster with it's pouches full!!

if you will be staying in hospital for a few days after your operation, you will lose weight because the food is not so good, therefore you may not eat or ou will find it easier to eat the healthy options due to the fact someone else is cooking.

i hope I've helped, email me if you would like to chat about it

GA cuasing weight loss - new one on me...

Sounds like sheeiiitteee to me.

People who have operations often lose weight, but it's nothing to do with GA, and everything to do with being ill/recovering/ not eating their normal unhealthy diet, any number of factors.

Unless you eat less for a few days after the op, you wont lose weight.

hi i am a nurse and i have never heard of this you may loose weight as you dont fancy eating or are having to much pain.
When i had my tonsills removed i lost weight as it was sore to swallow and hurt to eat.
But having a G/A wont help you to loose weight or make you loose weight.
Anaesthtics are very modern and light nowadays so its not traumatic to the body.
