I sat next to this lady who kept looking around at various people, if someone got up to use the restroom or arrived late she just looked right at them and stared. Another lady just flat out stares!! and one week it was right at me.

Why?

Personally, I find it rude. I imagine there are a number of reasons why people stare. I think others must be bored and cannot get interested in what's being done during service. Too many sleep during the sermon and even though they may not be able to help it, that's not something that needs to be done at church. They may be searching for someone in particular that they need to talk to after service and they end up staring at someone else instead. Some people like people watching and they do it at church because it passes the time. Others may not realize they even are staring; they may just be in their own little world and it seems as if they are staring at you. I wouldn't take it personally if others are staring at you and if you do, take it as a compliment.

The little old lady who stares has probably been going to the same church sitting in the same seat faithfully for years. She has developed a sense of ownership of the service and feels that it is her Christian duty to help keep order in the House of the Lord. The "stare" treatment is a means of letting the recipient of the stare feel her displeasure of that person's actions.

It is just a habit some folks have, some are looking to see who is there, others to see if their friends or loved ones have showed. and others are just plain old curious to see if anyone has showed up except them. When I go to a new church, it seems that everyone takes a look at one time or the other.

rude. i can understand being distracted and you take a quick glance toward the distraction, but to flat out stare is rude. so the answer is they're rude. next time stick your tongue out. sorry, that's rude too. just smile looking directly back in that person's eyes.

They were probably zoned out and not realizing they were staring. Just smile at them.

Why are you looking at the lady looking at people. Aren't you becoming the looker that you dislike so much for looking?
