My outdoor cat had a foot injury, but has since received treatment. His foot is no longer swollen but I think that because he had been limping/hopping for several days, he doesn't realize it doesn't hurt any longer! How can I help him realize he can now put weight on it without pain?? (He went to vet for the first time, he's an outdoor 'stray', had x-rays, good visual exam, no obvious injury, received penicillan and ammoxicillan, 2 days ago and I would've thought he'd be at the point now where he'd at least try to put weight on it! But nothing yet - other than a much happier and healthier cat!!) Any ideas on how to get him to "forget" about his foot? I did notice, too, that he is now licking his foot so perhaps it is still healing and the licking is a sign that maybe it's feeling better? Not that I want to, but I have to get him back outside with his brother and half-brothers. He does have a nice warm house with lots of straw and protection from the cold! Any help? THANKS!

Thanks for taking him to the vet. I remember your original post. Remember, even when you are sick, take the medicine, and start to feel better, it takes a while to come completely back. The vet visit probably handled the biggest part of the problem. He now has to finish healing and it may still be a bit painful, even though it looks better to you.

Thanks for caring about that cat.

I would say that your cat is still feeling a little tenderness in his foot. Cats are very stoic creatures and do not willingly show that they are injured in any way (a survival mechanism not to appear vulnerable to predators). He must therefore trust you A LOT to show his vulnerability. You are sooooo kind to have taken care of this stray... may the Great Cat God reward you!

Give him a few more days to heal completely.. He may be enjoying all the attention and home comfort!

At least you care enough to take you cat to the Vet unlike a lot of Yahoo's!

Thanks!

You really can't make a cat do anything he does not want ot do.

Does he like to play? Does he like to chase things? I bet he does! Especially if he has a nice warm place outside with straw! Mice!

Get a fishing pole (we have one/a small one) and put something with catnip in it on the end of the line. Throw it out and real it in and watch him go for it. It might take time for him to get use to it but our Thomas LOVES his fishing rod.

Try getting him to play with things if you toss it across the room. Or a laser pen on the floor to get him to chase it. If he's more concerned about playing and trying to run after something, he may forget about his foot.

Your cat knows best. Believe me, he will know if he's feeling better and able to put his foot down properly.

It might still itch or hurt a little. Help him get his mind of of his troubles and get out all his fav toys and just play.

Don't worry about it. It's a friggin' cat. He'll get over it. If he doesn't, you can at least laugh at him for limping everywhere. It won't really hurt him, will it?

LOL
