I believe they are using the term "Relaxin'" sarcastically. This is a fairly common military trait (e.g. "Too Easy") when using terminology.

I went to basic at Fort "Relaxin" Jackson back in 2001. Basically, they call it this because it is supposed to be much more laid back than all of the other places that they could send you for basic training.
I can tell you first of all, that when you get to reception station after arriving...you will do a LOT of "relaxin". Most of the time you spend there will be standing in line for chow (trust me, a LOT of time!). Besides that, they will make you clean and then you actually do get quite a bit of relaxing time...but take advantage of it! While Fort Jackson's basic may be more laid back than other places...it is far from relaxing.
I will tell you though, that if you are a highly disciplined person and have a lot of motivation and enthusiasm and an open-mind, you WILL have a good time and makes lots of new friends and learn new things. That is probably the best advise I could give you. And don't ever, EVER talk back to a drill instructor or be late for line-up in the morning...you will be on your face soldier!

i went to basic at fort leonard wood, but a lot of my friends went to jackson. after swapping our own stories and hearing tons of others, there's no question that flw's basic training experience is a little tougher than jackson's. the all-male units (at forts sill, knox, etc) have it even worse, though.
in defense of those who went to basic training at jackson, it's not a vacation. it is still basic training, and it's not substantially different there than anywhere else. "relaxin'" is a relative term, and it's just something army people like to use to make fun of each other.

i went to Ft Knox ( school of hard Knox) and let me tell you! its the toughest place to train from my experience...I asked a lot of people and they told me that they were allowec to use cell phones and ipods during basic and ait! Not at Ft. Knox, we did not get any electronics, magazines or priviledges. We were treated like red phase privates all 16 weeks.

Someone is pulling your chain. I was at Jackson in 1976 and I doubt they have made it any easier.

My daughter was there and she actually liked it. She unfortunately had to leave on a medical. It only makes you a better person.
