Some Native American cerimonies use peyote as well as mushrooms for "spirit to connect to source"...they believe it and I am not sure they are wrong.

No, they give you the "illusion" of enlightenment. Drugs alter the brain, the personality and the physical side. You want enlightenment? Then dont go seeking it from something that just might stuff your life up in the long run. Search for what you want to believe in and do it that way.

I've only learned that I am better off without them even though they were fun to do at the time. I usually forgot any 'enlightenment' I may have gotten once the drugs wore off so it was pointless to use them for that reason. They made me more depressed in the long run.

No! Drugs alter the body, chemically, physically and emotionally. There is no enlightenment in that! Enlightenment comes thru time and learning. There is no shortcut!

Drugs will alter your mental state, so yes, I guess in a way it can. But not that I would actually use them to become enlightened.

drugs can give you a temporary release from normal thought patterns. This can cause a sense of expanded awareness and can sometimes lead to a brief but very profound insight. The problem is the experience is always temporary and undependable and it you take drugs for very long you end up losing reality rather than gaining it.

They will give you everything but enlightenment. Been there, done that. Now I am clean though. I'll probably never be able to be president. Drat.

drugs are like a car with no brakes and no steering wheel: they can get you there fast and with little effort, but the odds are you're going to crash. The road to Enlightenment is a curvy one.

meditation is like bicycle training: it'll get you there under your own power and control, but you have to work at it, and have patience as you build your (metaphoric) muscle and skills.

yes- look at every worthwhile piece of art in the last 100 years, be it paintings, movies. songs, books, all done with people who where exploring their inner being while using drugs. It is a fundamental aspect of our life's journey to explore the world through drugs, all societies except our own have done this. Our own capitalist economies frown on this as they do not want us to find peace with our self, peace with others and to understand the nature of the world, which comes through drug use. Don't mix up use and misuse
