I have been given a gram of powder form azithromycin and the instructions say take with water. When we asked at the doctor they said that we couldn't take it with soda but does it have to be water? I am afraid that it is gonna taste really bad and I might throw it back up and have to start all over again with another prescription. It is a one time thing too and I am reading on here that some take it for a week. Anybody know??

Azithromycin is a anti-biotic, if mixed with something else other than water may interact with the drug, making inert (useless).

Follow the instructions you were given, making sure you have something to eat or drink (NOT FIZZY) after you have had the medication.

I would imagine it may taste awful, but as this drug is given to children, it may have some sort of flavouring as children will NOT have something that taste shocking.

I have included a link on azithromycin, which will give you further information about this drug, and what you should not take with azithromycin.

Good luck and hope you feel better soon!

I have never heard of powdered azithromycin. Take it with lots of water if you can, to keep the upset stomach down. It won't taste great, but I doubt if you will vomit it up. People take Zpacs for 3-5 days. That's not powdered, it's tablets.

You can wrap in a piece of bread and swallow the lot. I suggest that you avoid milk products and also alcohol. several hours before and after taking the medicaion.
Azithromycin does not usually cause the srong sromache distress that the older generation erythromycin did. (they are close cousins in the macrolide antibiotic family.).
Erythromycin brought me to my knees even though I have a cast iron stomach for almost all medications and food poisoning. (i have been the "last man standing" several times in the past for the latter problem.).
It was a nasty humbling experience.
There are alternative antibiotics, but I not know your problem, so I cannot make any suggestions.
Good luck,
Doc. Dan.
