Sit your parents down and explain to them that while you appreciate their concern for your welfare, you really feel your being deprived by their refusal to allow you these things. If they still say no, then you'll just have to accept it and work to prove to them you're responsible enough for these things.
Don't shout and argue or row, as this is will just vindicate them.
Good luck.
(My parents are quite strict too, you just have to find a balance that you guys can both uphold).

As a parent I would see having a Cell Phone would be a need .IM is a thing that teens go threw. The only bad thing about IM is that there are alot of nasty people out there.I can see where they would be strick on that ,at the same time they need to trust you.

I'm sure not how old an 8th grader is (UK here), but my children had mobile phones from the age of 11. This meant I was able to text them if they were late or they could text me etc. It gave me peace of mind.

Friends love texting each other and it's often cheaper and quicker to send a simple text than to make a phone call.

So if you 11 or over I would tell your parents how responsible you would be and how they would be able to contact you and you, them, whenever is needed.

Hope this helps.

Good luck, hope you get one!

first of all we grew up with out all he fancy **** . its not really something you can't live without.. you really don't need a computer . they can get you into really life threatening problums. anyone can be anyone they want on a computer . you can tell someone that you are rich ect. and be poor and homeless . your parents care about you and want to protect you . from danger. you might not understand .

Tell her that you promise to only talk to friends. Say Mom I have not give you a reason not to trust me and if you let me do this I won't let you down. I want you to trust me but you have to let me do things in order for you to trust me.
