Make sure the box is alway clean. I have a cat who won't use it if there's even 1 lump in there. Maybe he doesn't like the litter you're using. Try a different brand. He could also be sick. He might need a visit with the vet. Remind your Mom that pets are family members and not to be just given away at a whim. Remind her that dumping a pet is illegal. Tell her about you needing to learn responsibility and that getting rid of an animal before attempting to fix the problem is irresponsible. Good luck!

Thats a very common thing that parents do . My cat use to do that all the time accept it was on the bed ! Anyway since your cat poops in the dining room then you might probly know when is the time she dose that if you don't observe that for 1 day and the next time she wants to go then take her to her cat litter and make her stay there until she does it . Keep on doing this until you see some changes and then try to get her in the habit of doing that ! And make sure that the "litter" is suitable and clean for your cat ! hope that helps !

Do you have two litterboxes for her? Some cats want to urinate in one box and poop in another. If litterboxes are over a year or two old the plastic has been permeated with smells that the cat detects and doesn't like, even when they are cleaned out and washed by humans in a timely fashion.

It's worth a try to get two new boxes and see how it goes. Sometimes we can thank god for small favors - urination is an intolerable situation for cat owners, poopies can be picked up with toilet paper or a paper towel, deposited in a brown paper lunch sack, and taken immediately to the garbage can outside the house. Tell your mother you will do that and to give you more time before "dismissing" the cat to an uncertain fate.

Cat usually only soil in the house if they're having problems with their litterbox.

The litterbox needs to be kept clean at all times; this means you need to clean it thoroughly EVERY DAY

Some cats don't like highly scented litter. If you're using this kind, switch to a plain unscented type.

Some cats want privacy when they use the litter box. Try putting the litter box under a small table or cardboard box so the cat can have its privacy when going potty.

Another simple solution: restrict where your cat is allowed to be in the house. Keep her out of rooms you don't want her to be in.

Hi there...generally when a cat inappropriately soils outside of the litter box it is indicative a medical problem which is making her associate pain to the litter box. If nothing else has changed such as litter brand, location of the box, new changes in the home causing stress, competition for the litter box if there is a multi-cats, cleanliness is not frequent enough for her etc. ...would most likely be something medically related. Additionally, some cats prefer to defecate in one box and urinate in another as well.

Here's an article about inappropriate house soiling by Cornell Cornell University College of Veterinary Medicine of Feline Health:
http://www.vet.cornell.edu/fhc/brochures/Housesoiling.html

House soiling is the most common behavior problem reported by cat owners. It includes urination and/or defecation outside the litter box, as well as urine spraying.

Why do cats eliminate outside of the litter box?
One common misconception is that cats soil in inappropriate places for revenge. It is tempting to conclude, "He defecated on the living room carpet to punish me for leaving him for the weekend." But this kind of calculation requires sophisticated cognitive abilities that cats aren't believed to possess. Furthermore, this conclusion assumes that cats view their urine and feces as distasteful, when in fact they do not. It is only we humans who view it that way.

Medical Problems
So why do cats urinate or defecate on your bed or carpet? Medical problems are one possibility. Inflammation of the urinary tract may cause painful or frequent urination, inability to urinate, bloody urine, and crying during urination. An affected cat is likely to eliminate outside the litter box if he comes to associate the box with painful urination, or if he has an increased urgency to urinate. In addition, kidney, liver, and thyroid diseases often lead to increased drinking and urination. Inflammation of the colon or rectum, intestinal tract tumors, intestinal parasites, and other gastrointestinal conditions may cause painful defecation, increased frequency or urgency to defecate, and decreased control of defecation. Age-related diseases that interfere with a cat's mobility (for example, arthritis, nervous system disorders, or muscular diseases), or with his cognitive functions can also influence his ability to get to the litter box in time. In short, any medical condition that interferes with a cat's normal elimination behavior can lead to house soiling.

Litter Box Aversions
Behavioral problems, such as litter box aversions, inappropriate site preferences, or urine spraying can also lead to house soiling. An aversion implies that there is something about the litter box that your cat finds unsavory. It could be the box, the litter, the location of the box, or all three.
