Well, we still cannot predict earthquakes. Humans are still studying animals, who still can predict when an earthquake will come, but have not made much progress.

But to be optimistic, we know the areas that are likely to get hit by earthquakes very often, unlike the past. But we still cannot predict when the next earthquake will strike.

I agree that they generally are not predictable even today, but there are certain patterns in seismic activity on some fault lines that are indicators of impending earthquakes, but sometimes quakes occur without producing the patterns. Quake prediction its about as accurate as predicting the weather two weeks from now. I would call this an improvement in predictability, even though it is still not very accurate.
