Their Lord responds to them: 'I will not let the deeds of any doer among you go to waste, male or female - you are both the same in that respect... (Qur'an, 3:195)

Anyone who acts rightly, male or female, being a believer, We will give them a good life and We will recompense them according to the best of what they did. (Qur'an, 16:97)

Men and women who are Muslims, men and women who are believers, men and women who are obedient, men and women who are truthful, men and women who are steadfast, men and women who are humble, men and women who give alms, men and women who fast, men and women who guard their private parts, men and women who remember Allah much: Allah has prepared forgiveness for them and an immense reward. (Qur'an, 33:35)

Corrupt women are for corrupt men and corrupt men are for corrupt women, Good women are for good men and good men are for good women. The latter are innocent of what they say. They will have forgiveness and generous provision. (Qur'an, 24:26)

Islam first gave women their rights in a time when women were nothing but the property of men. Islam gave women the right to buy and sell on their own, own businesses and express her views politically. These were all basic rights which the American woman was not granted until relatively recently! It also encouraged women to study and learn Islamic knowledge, breaking a ban which several religions had stipulated, which forbid women to acquire any religious knowledge or touch religious texts... It also abolished the practice of marrying a woman without her consent. Thus, one would have to be very stubborn indeed to refuse such obvious facts and proofs that Islam was women's first liberator.

By the way "arf bee". Women get periods, and they can't pray when they are on their periods, so how can you expect them to lead prayers anyway?

What examples you people are giving me is not the religions fault, its peoples fault. So how do you say Islam teaches people to be that way? We do have a right to education, to work, own land and so on. Islam began these rights. My point is how do you say Women and men are not equal in Islam.

2006-12-02 10:15:14 · update #4

And also, how does a woman covering her body make her not equal to men? Men and women have different roles and are different, but are treated equally. Women have breasts and figures which attract unwanted attention. Islam does not treat women as objects, so how can you call islamic women opressed especially since they choose to dress like that. It just shows that they have more dignity and respect for themselves not to show off their bodies to people they do not know.

Eri...The period is unclean, and we must only pray when we are completely clean. That's what is wrong with praying when we are on our periods. How is that brainwashing of any sort?:S It's like if we were urinating while praying, that would not be very nice would it. It does not mean we can not ask God for things. Praying is different to us. It is the obligatory prayers which are prayed 5 times a day we can not pray. If we wish to ask Allah for guidance, we can still make dua.

A man was eviscerated and ripped apart in Afganistan last week for daring to teach women. This was done by the Taliban. LAST WEEK. And you say women are treated the same? No education, can't go outside without a male relative, need 5 witnesses to a rape to claim it wasn't her fault and would probably still be killed by her male relatives anyway? Doesn't matter what the book says if this is how people interpret it.

Edit: wait a sec. How does having her period stop someone from praying, or being capable of leading prayers? It looks like you're a woman from your avatar - I'm really sorry you've been brainwashed to think this way. You might want to move over to America and see what life could be like. Or Europe. Or South America.

Try living in Saudi Arabia for ten years as my Dad did, then you will see what really goes on. Also read Princess by Jean Sassoon, the story of the life of a Saudi Princess, who is now under protection and can never return to Saudi because she told the truth about what happened to women there.

in predominantly muslim countries, women are seen as second class citizens, that's a fact. So if so many people are misinterpreting what the Qur'an says, how can the Islam that is practiced today be a true faith. In effect you are saying that millions of muslims all over the world have got it wrong and if they have then they are not true followers of Islam. i know people can misinterpret things from anything but if so this is one hell of a misinterpretation on their part!! Are you gonna tell them??

I understand that that's the theory. Unfortunately, what most people see in the news or read about is fundamentalists who repress women in every way - they can't leave the house by themselves, can't attend school, can't drive a car, etc. That's what most people see, and therefore that's what they believe.

I often have to wonder myself if there really is a community, country, culture, where women in Islam are given the rights they're truly supposed to have.

The Taliban are Muslims.
They do not believe women should be seen even let alone be educated and allowed to work.
The Taliban disobey the Quran then.

What is written and what is practised are tow different thing.
Sorry.

i think the problem most people have is the verse where it says that men are better than women, therefore they can beat their wives.

"Quran 4:34: Men are the maintainers of women because Allah has made some of them to excel others and because they spend out of their property; the good women are therefore obedient, guarding the unseen as Allah has guarded; and (as to) those on whose part you fear desertion, admonish them, and leave them alone in their sleeping places and beat them; then if they obey you, do not seek a way against them; surely Allah is High, Great."

islam has many good qualities, but it has some bad qualities as well.

oh yeh, and how many blokes go round with there face covered except for there eyes, unless there robbing a bank, how many walk behind the women, how many men ask permission to speak in a room full of elders, the trouble with the quran is not the reading its the individuals interpratation, its only law when you want it to be, they have there own inflatable doll now, it blows itself up.
