My Pretty 6 years old female dog ran away from home one night to die alone after being sick for an entire afternoon. She was only 6 and no health problems ever. The vet told us she chose to run away cause she felt she was dying and she wanted to spare us from the pain of seeing that. Any of you ever heard of that? Would you agree with his oppinion ? Disagree ?

Thanks a lot. It's been 2 years and i simply can't get over my loss.

My yellow lab died more than 16 years ago and it still hurts and will hurt forever. What your vet said may be true, but remember animals don't speak English, so sometimes we create situations that help us cope with the loss. You want the pain to diminish, so thinking that your dog spared you the pain of seeing her die, she chose to go off on her own. Whether this is true or not (remember no one can know for sure) isn't as important as what you believe. Keep all the positive and wonderful memories in the front of your mind, these memories and time are your best friends in getting through this awful time. Remember Rainbow Bridge. Wish you the best.

I have NEVER heard of a dog running away from home to die. I do know they will go out in the yard or somewhere in the house away from everyone to die. How can your vet tell you the dog went off to die if she wasn't seriously ill. Did the vet see her that one afternoon that she was sick?Just wondering how the vet came upon the conclusion that the dog was ill enough to die. I am so sorry for your loss. Have you gotten another dog yet? If not, maybe you should.

My dog was let out when I was 10 years old and refused to come in the house one day. We put some water outside and left for a practice. My dog had a seisure and passed away. It was very hard since my sister and I were only 9 and 10 but the vet said that Rudy didnt want to come inside because he knew that he was going to die and for some reason dogs like to be away from their owners to pass away Im very sorry about your dog

seems like guilt lingers for 2 years now; I don't think that the dog left to die after only one afternoon of being sick; all of our dogs get sick ; upset stomach etc; your vet doesn't have a clue why your dog left; doesn't make sense for a healthy 6 year old dog to leave to die; I don't know why the dog was loose in the first place but 2 years later, you will never know and need to move on ; you can't change the past only don't make the same mistakes in the future; please in the future , take your pet serious and protect her; she could have been stolen, anything is possible. You will never know.

I have heard of this. Just like animals will seperate themselves from the pack or herd to die. Puppies that are ill will go to another corner of the box away from the rest of the litter. It is very possible. Sorry for your loss. It is devastating. Sometimes to heal that pain or emptiness is to give another loyal companion a loving home. It does help heal for some..others feel there could never be another to replace the one that has been lost.

Yes this could happen. I had an old Sled dog leader that had cancer. when her time was near she kept trying to wander off to be alone to die. I ended up restraining her just to keep her warm... it may have prolonged her agony but at least i knew she was not alone. Many wounded animals leave their pack, part of it is instinct. a wounded or sick animal can bring predators to the rest of the group. by going off alone they don't endanger the rest.

I agree with your vet. Your dog must have loved you (and still does) very much. If it is possible, why don't you rescue a dog from the animal shelter and save its life in memory of your dog who died? Also, I totally believe you will be with your dog again when it is your time to cross over.

I'm so sorry to hear that she ran away. Dogs are as sensitive as people, so, what the vet said may be true.
