I think it seldom happens, and when it is shown, more often than not there is more to the story than is ever told by the press.

Police do not have unlimited power and normally in the process of dealing with bad and dangerous people, physcial force is used.

There is no place for police brutality within the profession. Police officers *are* limited as to the amount of power they have.

That said, of course there will be instances of brutality and overstepping the bounds of legal authority -- cops are human beings and not perfect.

Cops who may be involved in brutality are investigated, arrested (if they broke the law), charged, and hopefully convicted if found guilty by a jury.

The police departments have a section in their Departmental Policy book that is about 100 pages long on their Use of Force policies. Did you know that police officers are liable criminally for any misuse of their power? They can be tried by the Feds. The General Orders or Departmental Policy is available for the public. If you are concerned, look up your local police and read it. It will clarify things a bit.

I hate when a cop does brutality. Like the video of putting a perp in the car then pepper spraying, or the Rodney King incident. Police officers need to be put in check.

For all of you people who think that the police have limited powers and are held accountable for their actions, guess again. Obviously you have never been one of their victims, and should you ever become one, you will find out very quickly that (some) police are sanctioned bullies who treat suspects like less than dirt because they CAN, and unless they have bashed in your head or caused "Rodney King" like injuries to you, the civil rights attorneys will tell you, and I quote, "Yes, they violated your civil rights, but it's your word against theirs, and you weren't injured badly enough, and our caseload is just too large...."

So in response to your question, YES, YES, YES, there should be limits to the amount of powers police and other public officials have, enforced by a power other than THEMSELVES.

Police do not have unlimited powers, and they are scrutinized and held accountable for every action they take. You hear about police brutality every so often, but compared to the days and months and years that go by that you don't hear anything, do you really think it is common practice?

Regardless of what rules you have in place, there is really no way you can conrtol individual action on the part of the cop when he is out on the streets. The only thing citizens can do is to report it to internal affairs, and get a lawyer when instances like these occur.

There should be and there is. But it can be a rough world out there for the police on a Saturday night, and sometimes you`ve got to get them before they get you.
