well, I don't think it is a pagan holiday anymore. first of all, the ancient Christians when they were being persecuted, the pagans would go to some pagan event and worship there gods, and do all sorts of icky things. if someone wasn't going somewhere on that holiday, they were considered Christians and they would be killed. so, they had to do something. they went t in secret to worship god on that day. the Christmas tree, is when a bunch of pagans were worshiping a tree and St. basil cut it down. the pagans were horrified but did nothing. St.basil said that his god would grow the tree back in only 1 year. and it did. so that is why we have the traditional Christmas tree. also, St. nick, was a saint that was very rich and gave lots of money to the poor. one day, when a poor man was about to sell his daughters because he had no dowry for them, St. Nicholas in secret threw money in the chimney, so the man could have enough money to give a dowry. the money landed in some stockings that were drying by the fire and that is were the Christmas stocking came from. (he threw it down the chimney because he was too humble to let the man know who he was.) and that is were most of the traditions came from. Christmas has been changed into a Christ holiday. It used to be a pagan one. no one knows that though. at least not many people. so they pester everyone to believe that Christmas is bad.

The roots that we can discern for Christmas are certainly pagan.
Part of what some folks don't like is the way that some in the United States claim that we're a Christian Nation--and have been trying to bring that state of affairs about through many avenues. Celebrations of Christmas by individuals should pose no problems, it's when the state becomes involved.
The founding folks of this nation indeed were quite smart in separating the state and the church.
I agree though, that anyone who wants to should celebrate! I know quite a few agnostic folks or unbelievers who hold it as one of their most dear holidays.
Your question is good. Very similar to those who want gay marriage to be universally accepted in this country. Proponents of same wonder how in the world gay marriage might hurt those who oppose it? Can't they simply not take part, or stay away from ceremonies they find offensive?

Why are you offended by people saying anything but Merry Christmas? And why does saying Happy Holidays or Happy Chanukah (an older holiday, though not as popular until recently, holiday then Christmas) mean that people are trying to do away with Christmas?
I think you are taking this a little too seriously. Just enjoy yourself and let everyone else enjoy themselves this time of year. Celebrations, parties and religious festivities have always been around during this time of year, long before Christianity. It doesn't make a difference why people celebrate just as long as people have a good time!!! Just let things go, celebrate as you wish and go with the flow.
************
Or don't enjoy it, but leave your misery during a VERY joyous time of year, for almost everyone else, at home so the rest of us can enjoy it with those who also want to enjoy it, regardless of the reason for celebration.
I hope that you find your happiness soon, once that happens you won't have such a difficult time accepting others ideas as others who have found happiness have accepted yours.
Have a joyous holiday!!!

Some Christians even oppose it (no joke). The Puritans outlawed Christmas celebrations in Plymouth Colony. It's only become a popular holiday since Victorian times.
I don't have objections to anybody celebrating Christmas, but I don't much care for it. I used to work in a department store, and I got to see first hand a lot of the "Christmas spirit" ("What do you mean 'it's backorderd!'"), people fighting over presents, parking spots, etc. Much of my Christmas time at my next job was working mandatory overtime (some way to enjoy the Holidays). It's been over commercialized, and truth be told, I would rather stay away from it altogether.

I don't know how old you are but did someone tell you no christmas this year for you. I think you need to define your point because you sound like you are whining. Well last I hear walmart put the christmas back into happy holidays and so you should be safe until next year, unless of course they don't make their money quota and then they will be scrooge all year long. Maybe people are tired of people who love christmas let themselves be used to spend unnecessary money to pump back into the economy when they are the one who can least afford it. What really is for sale at christmas that isn't for sale and probably for the same price during the rest of year. Oh yeah all that junk from china, lites and all that commercial stuff. Last I hear that christmas was celebrating the birth of Christ, not get a new playstation 3. You must not care about the celebration of the birth of christ, but that you only get what you have been lusting for all year long and you don't want to save your own pennies to get. You want someone else to spend money they don't have to entertain your wants and desires. Well I hope you get everything you want this XMAS.

Actually the early church adopted the dates of Solstice and the festival of Mirtha and turned them into Christmas. Actually Christmas has not been celebrated as long as people can remember. In this country it was really celebrated until the 1840s-1850s. It was outlawed in England after Cromwell and his crowd took over. It kind of came back, but if it hadn't been for Charles Dickens' A Christmas Carol, we wouldn't have half the traditions we do now. Most people who think we should say Happy Holidays aren't against Christmas, but they want Christians to realize that not everybody celebrates Christmas. Bill O'Reily and his ilk bring this up to detract people from the important issues. There isn't a war on Christmas and people don't want to do away with it. Have you been to Wal-Mart lately?

I don't have a problem with Christmas. I celebrate it every year. However, I call it Yule and wish everyone a Happy Holiday because I'd be lying to myself if I said Merry Christmas. Point is though, I think any time when friends and family get together is a good thing and a reason for celebration.

This past week an opinion letter in the Christian Science Monitor suggested that Christmas not be a National LEGAL holiday but I
know of no organized effort to do away with celebrating Christmas.
I suspect that you, and others like you, are just trying to sow religious
discension by your inflammatory writing.
Respond in writing with just who those "people" you claim are.
For a change, put up or shut up.

Yes, christmas has been around longer than any of us are alive. So what? Look, no one is trying to 'do away' with christmas, or any of your other holidays, or anyone else's. We just don't want you spending gov't money or using gov't property to celebrate it with/on. That's all. That money is there for everyone, and isn't there for you to use for your religion. Christmas isn't a pagan holiday, just at the same time as one.

No one wants to "do away with Christmas." The department stores replaced Merry Christmas with Happy Holidays because there's more than one holiday in December and they wanted to include them all; it's not some obsession with being politically correct or a conspiracy to take Jesus out of everything. No one is offended by it and no one cares if people celebrate it.
