If God sleeps, then His children do too. His reflection (image) never sleeps and is never dead. How is it that the death process seems real after Jesus went out of his way to show us the truth? Didn't Jesus say, "the Son does likewise?" As you understand this teaching of His, then the sleeping business is less confusing.

there are scriptures that strongly suggest man's continued self-awareness and continued existence after death (Luke 16:19-31; 2 Cor. 5:1-10; Phil. 1:21-23).

How about both?
Jesus likened death to sleep. (John 11:11) We when die, we return to dust. (Genesis 3:19) Our consciousness ends, our thoughts perish. (Ecclesiastes 9:5, 10; Psalm 146:4; Ezekiel 18:4)
The Bible does say death will be done away with. (Hosea 13:14, 1 Corinthians 15:54,55, Revelation 20:14,15) Paul said that there would be a resurrection of both the righteous and the unrighteous. (Acts 24:15)
Death is the penalty we pay for inherited sin. When we die, we have been acquitted of our sins. (Romans 6:7, 23)
The Bible promises a resurrection. (Revelation 20:13) Death and Hades will be emptied, and those who are brought back to life will be judged. Judged based on what? Would you expect God to bring someone back to life and judged them based on their actions of their previous life? If they have died, paid the penalty for their sins, and been acquitted as Paul wrote, that would not be reasonable. The resurrection gives them a second chance. An opportunity to learn what God's requirements are and then be judged on the basis of their actions after their resurrection.
The Bible also promises a resurrection to life in heaven. Paul indicated that the resurrection they looked forward to was like Christs, i.e. a resurrection to life in heaven (Romans 6:5) Peter indicated likewise (2 Peter 1:4, 1 Peter 3:18) Paul indicated that Christ was the fist to be resurrected in this manner. The resurrection of "those who belong to him" would happen when Christ comes (1 Corinthian 15:20-23) This would mean that Paul and the first century Christians he wrote to could expect to be "asleep in death" until the time when Christ would come.
Those resurrection to heaven are described in Revelation 20:5,6 as ruling with Christ for the thousand years. Ruling over what?
Jesus taught his followers to pray for God's Kingdom to come, and his will to take place on the earth as well as in heaven. (Matthew 6:10)
Isaiah 45:18 indicates God created the earth to be inhabited. God's purpose is for the righteous to inhabit the earth. (Psalm 37:9, 11, 29)
The Kingdom is portrayed in the Bible as a real government that will replace the existing governments of the earth. (Daniel 2:44; Revelation 17:12-14, 19:11-21)
Two groups; one faith; two kinds of resurrections. Jesus spoke of his followers as a flock, but also said he had "other sheep" (John 10:1-16) In Revelation two groups are spoken of: a group of 144,000 and a "great multitude" who come out of the great tribulation, which happens on earth (Matthew 24:3,21 Revelation 7:4, 13)
People will be living on the earth--those who submit themselves to God's will and Christ's rulership--this includes those who are resurrected to life on earth for their "second chance" and are judged righteous. The Kingdom is God's means of bringing about his original purpose for the earth.

From traditional Christian doctrine, when you die you go to judgement and then to Heaven or hell. There are some that hold the position of "soul sleep", just as some hold the position that the soul is not eternal and if it does not go to Heaven it is destroyed.

There clearly is no answer to this. It's a mystery, and best to keep it a mystery!
Belief systems (different churches, different ideas) trying to enforce their doctrines on others is the root of much evil.
