I have an old RCA 20" tv. When I press "on". I hear the click sound it normally makes, but nothing shows up, and the sound is gone. When I press "off" it clicks like it is shutting off.

Anyone know what is wrong? I know I'm probably just going to have to buy a new one, but I'm just curious.

the old style TV has a filament in its picture tube called a cathode (which is why it's called a cathode ray tube) which is the source of the electrons which are steered by the other electronics to hit the fluorescent surface of the tube and produce a picture. Something has happened to that cathode; either it's getting no current (in which case a transformer has burned out) or the filament is burned out, so no current passes through, and no electrons are emitted.

Either way, your TV is not made to repair, and a CRT is way expensive anyhow, even if you could get one.

Your TV tube may not be burnt as the other say. On the inside there are a series of cables that connect the circuit board to the TV and thus deliver the video signal through a series of 1's and 0's. Open your TV up, but be careful, make sure to wear thick gloves along with some surgical gloves to avoid being electrocuted. The tube inside your television is charged with thousands of volt of electricity. Touch a metal screw driver to your tube before attempting to fix anything. This should remove the charge. Then check for any loose cables connecting them to the intended receptacle.

Good luck and I hope this helps. P.S. NO GUARANTEES...

Sometimes the tube goes out on the TV. Thus you are getting a reception with the sound but not the picture. I highly recommend buying a new television rather than repairing your old one. They are very inexpensive.

Good luck.

Yeah, I can also do brain surgery over the internet!!!
You really expect people to diagnose what's wrong with your old 20" tv without laying eyes on it? Get real.

I recommend just going out and buying a new one because its cheaper to do that then to have that one fixed.
