As a Christian, I have done a lot of research and stuff on this, because I was confused about it for awhile. I found a series of science based lectures (on DVD) quite helpful. But the reason that we believe the Earth is approximately 6000 years old is because if you add up the recorded history, as well as the genealogy in the Bible, that is the approximate point of the Creation. I believe in the creation, and find it much harder to believe in something such as the Big Bang. If you are able to, try to see the DvD series of Creation vs. Evolution. (from source)

Only absolute literalist believe that the earth is only 6,000 years old. The figure comes form adding up the age of all of those generations of the people whose lives the Bible descibes. Most Christians accept the claims of science and find that they are in keeping with the basic truthes the Bible offers (such as the order of creation - Light, earth, water, orbital rotation through gravity which creat day and night, plant life, animal life, human life). Not all do, just the fundamentalists (those who follow and believe the Bible word for word.) Personally, I am myself a Christian, I follow the scientific view regarding the age of the Earth. I believe it is millions of years old.

You have to be specific and let people know what kind of Christian you are asking about. There are over 33,000 Protestant denominations who each believe something different than the 32,999 others.
Are you asking what the Catholic Church teaches, or are you asking what the 33,000 different Protestant denominations that call themselves Christian believe?

That is as far back as we trace the human race, Adam & Eve, 6000 years ago. The geneology is given in the Bible from Adam to Jesus, and it definitely totals about 4000 years. And, of course, Jesus was born about 2000 years ago.

I don't. I believe it's millions of years old. That is an assumption based on what creationists say. Not all Christians are creationists.

I don't buy that theory, but the way they get that estimate is by counting back through the generations of geneologies that are listed in the Bible.
