I put him in a big metal bin yesterday, with the lid on, so he could smell his own pee and poop,and learn not to do it-how long should I leave him in there?

Hopefully you are joking. Quite simply to train a dog not to go in the house you watch him closely. When he starts that puppy pee circle thing take him outside tell him to get busy. When he does his business you give him praise and take him back in the house. You must be consistent. If you can't keep an eye on him let him be in his crate. The crate should be big enough for him to walk in and lay down but not wander around or he will go in there. Constant watching is the key - take him outdoors and a lot of praise for doing good. You should never raise your voice or hand to a dog. Not even a newspaper.

I would guess how ever long it took you to learn not to pee and poop in your pants when you mom left you in a bin!
