You can if you have a receipt for the donation from the food bank and if you itemize on your income taxes.

assuming you can itemize deductions on your tax return, you should also receive some kind of acknowledgement from the food bank. a charitable organization usually gives a statement showing the tax deductible portion of the donation, especially if its a generous amount.

I agree with the first answer. However, in addition to having a receipt you also must be itemizing deductions on your tax return to get any benefit from donations.

It is easier to claim donations that you have a receipt for, in case you ever have to go through an audit. If you want to claim it, keep a few of your grocery store receipts just in case.
