Correct. They were not kings either, but were magicians, or Magi. The idea may be from the numbers of gifts that were presented, that was three. But the number of Magi was not given, but it was plural, indicating more than one. Some Bible students think it could have been many hundreds or even several thousands.

It began as a tradition in art to paint three "kings" or magi (and later to have 3 kings in plays) because there were three gifts. Most people understand that there might have been many more of these "wise men" and that they would have also probably been accompanied by many servants.

This is most likely because stories grow and change as time goes on. No one who wrote the bible, was anywhere near Jesus's birth. By the way...the angels NEVER sang in the bible, yet how many stories and songs have you heard where the herald angels sing at the birth of Jesus?

Yeah and Gold was good, Frankincense at a push, but Myrrh what a waste of time, such a crap gift. He would rather the Magi brought a shovel to shovel up some of the donkey sh ite that was lying around the stable

The Bible doesn't support a lot of things, but does that stop humans from doing it? NO!

even though the Bible doesn't say this or support it
the church seems to get the idea from the three gifts that the wise men brought, the gold, frankincense, and myrrh

sandylynn, that is so true

I know it doesn't . People get that idea from the three gifts that they brought with them. Hey, did you know that they didn't come to the manger with their gifts either? They went to a house, where Jesus was called a "child" not a "babe" like when He was in the manger. Go figure. Someone's always messin' with the truth. <*)))><
