My grannie made them that way, not on purpose

I prefer them "lumpy'... my Mom used a "ricer" to mash her spuds, and I always loved the tiny lumps. I think this was partly because in the late '70's my Dad had a heart attack, so Mom added virtually no butter or milk to the 'taters. Dad would dust them with black pepper and then his tiny portion of gravy.

I've tried the 'instant' potato's and think they're nauseating.

I like lumpy mashed taters, too. Nowadays, the instant type have taken over, and ya just can't get instant taters to lump...lol!! I remember when my mom switched to instant many many years ago for a test run. My dad said he liked them, but there were no lumps, so the next time she tried to make them lumpy. I haven't a clue what she did but they were terrible, and after that she always made homemade lumpy mashed taters! Years later, she witnessed me using the instant version in my home and teased me about it, and asking if I could make them lumpy for her!?!

Oops, got carried away there, but it's the Holidays and memories of mom are fond ones!! Good question!

Lumpy, at least a little (or a lot!). And come on, guys, if you can't be bothered to make real mashed potatoes, eat out.

lumpy mashed potatoes with the skins are my favorite. I didn;t make mine lumpy on purpose (or my gravy), but I prefer them over the runny mashed potatoes.

Use your leftovers and add some diced onion and make potatoe pancakes!

When my mother tried to pass off boxed potato flakes as mashed potatoes, we rebelled! She forever after cooked the potatoes until ALMOST done, then mashed 'em so we'd have the lumps that proved they were real!

I like them lumpy and thick, with skins. I hate mashed potatoes when they're like soup, or cool whip consistency.

i love cheddar and garlic added to mashed potatoes and yes my grandma makes them lumpy too its her specialty but thats the way she learned to cook i guess lol
