like not just donating by mail, but actually going to the charity to help out, like for example wrapping presents for needy children or donating toys?

There are a couple of sites (among others) that you can use to find nonprofit organizations in your area:

www.guidestar.org
www.charitynavigator.org

If for example, you want to help an organization whose mission specifically involves children, use a related keyword in your search, as well as limiting the results to your area. I think you will find quite a few out there. I did a quick search on one of these for Connecticut (statewide) for nonprofits related to children and came up with close to 200 hits.
