im talkin about the one thats connected to the main big blades on top of the helicopter.

The short answer is; it prevents the helicopter from spinning. The long answer is quite long and probably more than you are interested in at this point.

I did some aircraft accident investigation in one of my jobs and we had to know how an aircraft operated to make any attempt at explaining why it crashed.
