Blood in the urine is called hematuria, and can have many causes. It can be the result of a kidney stone, bladder tumor, trauma to the urethra or bladder, or other things. If you have blood in your urine, you need to see a urologist to rule out the serious diagnoses (like cancer).

Listen to the doc, I had blood in my urine and it turned out to be RCC. I've been fighting it for 6.5 years now, not fun at all, unless you consider the coincidences. Born on June 27th, under the sign of Cancer, working in Oncology R&D, I was diagnosed on my bithday and have had three of the types of therapies I have worked on used on myself.

it could be because of different reasons and clinically the cause is diagnosed by the time of appearence of blood.
i.e. if haemeturia or blood in uine occurs at the begining of micturition then the possible cause is in the urethra, if it appears at the midstream urine then the cause is in the ureter or adjascent organs (prostate) and it is seen at the end then the cause is probably in the kidney
