I don't want them to swear on the Koran or the Bible - or any other religious work.

I want them to swear on the Constitution of the United States... THAT is what they are swearing to uphold - not a book of religious laws.

That said, if he is Muslim, why would be swear an oath on the Bible? - he might as well swear an oath on a Dr. Seuss book...it would have as much import to him as the Bible. If we're going to swear people into office using religious symbols (a mistake, in my opinion) we should definitely swear them in using the religious symbol that means something to THEM.

Do you mean the Qur'an? (Koran)
5 years ago, nobody had a problem. Now everyone is afraid of Islam. It isn't the religion that causes terrorism. It's terrorists.
Besides, if religion and government are supposed to be kept separate, they shouldn't be sworn in on ANY holy book.

But thankfully, it's not up to you. In fact, there is no constitutional requirement for any book to be used, and I would rather, as we are a secular society, that nothing be used - but if we are going to use a book, it must be something appropriate to the individual, since they are taking the oath. The Koran is the holy book for this individual, so is appropriate in that sense.

Oh yes, and then Congress will have to have a special meditation room in order for him to pray 6 times a day.

Soon all the schools will be required to have a special room set up for prayer. And all workplaces. All airports. All public buildings....

It doesn't matter what he holds dear. People wake up. The more you give up, it's going to be that much harder to get back. Do you want somebody who holds his religious beliefs above the constitution? All this P.C. garbage. Sister_go you are right.

This site is called Yahoo! Answers.

It's really simple. People ask questions, and others answer.

What you have done is use the site as a way to vent over something you disagree with.

Maybe you should redirect your efforts to learning to spell. Education is so much better than bigotry.

Why would you care?

I want them to take the oath in a way that means something to them. If they take an oath and the procedures mean nothing to them, the oath is worthless.
