I've seen very few serious thoughtful answers given to hard religious questions . Do you think this is so ? Why ?

Two reasons.

One, because it's fun.

Two, I'm trying to make up the points I spent asking my Noah question.

Oh, yeah, and most people aren't so much asking as trying to prove a point. So being flip or preachy are the most rewarding strategies.

It may be so, but I don't really check into others answers so I don't have a good feel for that. I think that with all the "silly" questions given, many may skim over them and miss them, but I would think that they would enjoy a real question once in awhile. However, some of the difficult questions are looking for non-spiritual answers, which makes it difficult to even start a response, as there would be so much ground to cover. Anyway, just a thought.

Some of the "questions" I've seen in this section, are usually more soap box orates then serious questions.

Or have a fanatical or intolerant slant.

Not to mention you get quite a few intolerants making immature jabs.

Religion and Spirituality are very personal subjects for many people. I find it hard to tell in this section when someone is being sincere, or when someone is just trying to "set" answerer's up for a debate or a flame or thumbs down.

Then there are simply questions in religious areas that many people have little experience in. Like if someone asks about Hindi holidays. Maybe their's not alot of Hindi users here. I certainly can't answer. Haven't a clue.

Then there are those that want people to validate why they have a faith. For example, if an athiest asks a question regarding God, I'm one of the few believers that have little compuction in changing their mind or getting them to understand my belief. It's their life. They're aware of the faith, they chose no. Fine with me.

So, that's my answer, and I'm stickin to it. Take care.

I think this section is infested with two types of people:

1. Adolescents (or adolescent-minded adults) who have just rejected their family's religion and are thrilled at the sense of rebellion it gives them. So they go around looking for places to insult other people's beliefs.

2. Adolescents (or adolescent-minded adults) who have just embraced 'the true religion' and are convinced that they know everything about God and everyone else is a sinner and a heretic.

Those of us who don't think like either of these groups would do well just to sigh tolerantly and ignore the rambunctious children. If they stopped getting responses they would just go away.

Remember, most of them will eventually grow up.

That explains the rants, but it also explains the questions that get ignored. Serious, difficult questions alienate people who think the world is simple, so they pretend such questions do not exist.

I don't know about other people, but I tend to do one of two things: give a thoughrful and serious reply, or be flippant.

Some of this has to do with my mood at the time, and some of it has to do with my willingness to invest up to maybe 45 minutes in composing a thoughtful reply. I'm not always willing to do that.

And, of course, there are differences of opinion on what we consider to be a "serious or difficult" question.

i used to give very well thought out and detailed answers until i discovered most people are just looking for personal validation, not real answers. Now i mostly do this for the points - if I really want a good discussion I go elsewhere

because the mentality of both believers and nonbelievers is to immediately go into defensive mode, so they start with an attack, best defense is a good offense.

but a good serious question throws them for a lew, and they're usually to stupefied to answer

Because there are few if any here qualified to answer serious questions about anything.

The rants result when people CANNOT answer the question. Anger.

Yes because people wanna be sarcastic when they see a question they don't agree with.
