Why do take parts of the Old Testament (eg. 10 Commandments, homosexuality is an abomination etc.), but reject other parts (eg. pork is not to be eaten, should grow your beard etc.)

All of the Bible - Old and New Testaments - are still in affect. Jesus said,

"Do not think that I have come to abolish the law.... I have come not to abolish but to fulfill. ...until heaven and earth pass away, not the smallest letter or the smallest part of a letter will pass from the law... Therefore, whoever breaks one of the least of these commandments and teaches others to do so will be called least in the kingdom of heaven. But whoever obeys and teaches these commandments will be called greatest in the kingdom of heaven." (Mt 5:17-19)

He also taught us, however, how to interpret the law. He picked wheat on the Sabbath because "the Sabbath was made for man and not man for the Sabbath." He said that while murder was a sin, so too was being angry at your brother (Mt 5:22). Finally, he told us that all the law and the prophets could be summed up in two commandments: love God, and love your neighbor. A lot of the stuff in the OT was symbolic and had a greater meaning. For instance, when God says not to wear clothes of mixed fabrics (Lev 19:19), I don't really thinks he cares about whether my shirt is part cotton and part polyester. If you look at the verse, you'll see that what he's really getting at, is don't mix your beliefs and practices with that of other religions and peoples or else you will become weakened and unproductive for God. The problem with the pharisees was that they followed the letter of law without following its intent. Today, we try to follow the intent of laws of the Old Testament as Jesus did.

When Jesus died and was buried and rose again the 3rd day, that is the Gospel, there is no other.
The Law including the Ten Commandments were nailed to the cross and no longer pertains to a righteous man.
Thats why the New Testament was written.
If you can believe, meaning that you learn to trust in, rely on and adhere to the Gospel in everything you do daily, you will become the Christian person that God desires us all to be.
Where God is there is Liberty and sufficient Grace.
Learn to read your Bible outloud (faith cometh by hearing, hearing by the word of God) and ask God to give you revelation of the holy scriptures as you read them. Be faithful in this process daily. You will also learn how to pray. The fervent prayers of a righteous man availeth much.
You will be amazed of the changes that will begin in your life.
This is what I believe, and I will not turn back to the old worldly religious ways of man.
Jesus sits at the right hand of the Father and laughs at the wicked ignorant ways of the world every day. So, repent and believe the Gospel.
The church that God is coming back after will not have a wrinkle, spot or blemish.
The GREATEST Sin of mankind towards God is UNBELIEF. The mouth speaketh whats in the heart. I can listen to anyone and hear there unbelief. It's easy. So is God's yoke. Give him a faithful try. The living God is waiting on us humans to acknowledge him. If you desire God to work and move in your life you must do the same. This applies to all mankind.

Tests exist for Christians (at least presently in the USA). One of them is the application of the '2 or more witnesses' principle (Matt.18:16, 2 Cor.13:1) combined with the 'all scripture is given by God' (2 Tim. 3:16-17).
Applying the above, the 'old testament' is not Genesis-Malachi, but the law of Moses (many scriptures and witnesses).
Some pass; many many fail. Let the above be a start of things.

Because the Bible is written almost in a timeline. God is active and living. He writes rules according to how he wants people to live at that time. God doesn't just say do this and then walk away, he is constantly revising and correcting and changing. Just like you treat a child differently as they grow. You don't feed them formula and make them watch cartoons their whole lives. You adjust things for their age and the way they live. Just because at age 5 they no longer need formula, doesn't mean it was wrong for them to have it at 6 months.
What I am trying to say is that maybe God revised his laws and then as time went on he changed things and expanded on others. Either way, if you read farther in the Bible, everything is explained, you just have to want to find the answers.
