They're caused by a virus. You could get one anywhere in your mouth. She should rinse with listerine for a couple of days.

You can get them anywhere in the mouth and it is cause by a form of herpes virus. I used to get them bad all the time and I finally stopped them by rinsing my mouth out with Hydrogen Peroxide at full strength from the bottle. Hold it in the mouth and and rinse the mouth for about 30 seconds and repeat. Do again every 8 hours and they should just about be gone within 24 hours. The peroxide doesn't taste good but it is tolerable and also doesn't huirt like an alcohol based antiseptic rinse. Also, don't swallow the stuff either. I completely disregarded the precautions on the bottle and it worked miracles for me getting rid of those painful sores. Now I don't get them at all. It was the only thing that ever worked for me too.

It may be an oral ulcer. It can be from too much acid in the body. There is a prescription medicine for the ulcers. If it's a canker sore, there is over the counter stuff to help that.

The most common cause of canker sores is an allergic reaction to "sodium laurel sulfate"...your friend should try sensodyne toothpast (original)...this does not have the laurel sulfate in it...PLEASE let your friend know this. I suffered with this for MANY years until I started using sensitive toothpaste and have not had one canker sore since.
