Lately, my Dad has had a very negative attitude and is making me want to avoid him. He is getting older now, maybe his personality is changing a bit and/or maybe he's just getting grouchy and I'm not used to it.

Last year he broke his leg and had to have an operation and luckily he's able to walk again. I wonder if his leg never fully heeled and he's in pain. Also, my mom & dad have been married almost 30 years and in our family, it's her way or no one's way. I wonder if he's a little tired of that. She has alot of strange idiosyncrasies!

The last month or so, I have had my own personal stress/anxiety issues that I'm trying to work on. It's so hard to stay positive and have an upbeat personality around him, when he's down and complains alot. What can I do?

Please try to withstand it. You dad has taken care of you all his life. Now in in his old age, he needs you the most. People with age gets grouchy and complain a lot. I know you get irritated but this is when the good person in you should try to calm you. I hope you understand and try to remain upbeat and positive. If not anything, God will repay you for taking care of your dad in the after life.

Look into your heart and try to understand your parents are not perfect. They have issues that might not have anything to do with you. Try either, creating or buying a card that expresses your love for your parents and your willingness to discuss the problems they have with past or present issues. Pertaining to their relationship, that's effecting your emotions about trying to show them, both how much you love them and that you want all of us to be happy ,again. If this does not work consider talking to a clergymen or seek professional mental health help, but continue telling them you love them. For love can heal a broken heart and mend it again. Good Luck to you all. Merry Christmas.

Try your best to be positive around him. He is your dad and needs your support. Maybe you can try to steer him into a conversation about something that interests him or maybe take him out somewhere to make a change of scenery for him.

instead of being happy and saying dad, be happy and call him the groucy old man, eventually he'll get tired of it and tell you what's wrong
