My cat caught a black rat snake. It wasn't poisonous but my husband took it away from him. It was already mortally wounded and died. Cats are pretty quick but I don't know if they can determine what snakes are poisonous and one even lucky strike from the snake would kill it. Good luck!

Cat Vs Snake

I took my cat, Jethro to the vet last year. He wasn't eating or drinking. I noticed his jaw was majorly swollen. The vet said he thought he had been bitten by a snake.

He spent 3 days at the vet, but survived. I never seen the snake, so I assume it also survived.

If I had been in your place I would've done the same thing. Don't put your cats life in jeopardy when you can do something about it. It might have killed the snake, but then again the snake might have killed your cat.

This year I found a black snake about 6 feet long and quite round in the dogs pen. I have dogs that are part lab/australian shepherd. They were scared to death of the snake. My husband killed it.

When I think about it, I don't think my cats would have had a chance with it. I hate to kill any living thing, but my cats and dogs come before snakes.

How big is the snake? Is it warm outside? If it was one of our snakes we had this cat would have been eaten.
As for a snake you find in your garden kill the snake and have a rodent and bug problem. Snakes are here for a reason.
If a little snake your cat may have killed it. But like any other critter why let your cat kill it if your cat is not going to eat it?
Any person who loves critters, loves all critters and not a bigot against certain ones....
If it is cold outside the snake can not move as fast.

Sometimes. Cats are natural hunters and have very quick reflexes. Yes, snakes can be killed by cats. Why take the risk? Your cat is not wild and as you said the snake could have been poisonous and snake will fight back. The cat could have lost. Nothing is absolute.

Why would you want your cat to kill the snake, anyway? Snakes have a valuable place in nature and they take care of a lot of rodent problems. Find out if there ARE any poisonous snakes where you live and if so, learn what they look like. Then, leave the snake alone! It doesn't want to mess with you (or your cat)j, it just wants to be left alone to live its life.

Depends on the animals in question. If your cat had very quick reflexes and the snake was sitting in the shade and slow moving, the cat could have killed the snake. However, with both animals at the top of their game,it would be a close match, also depending on the kind of snake.

This is true. I have seen footage of a house cat beating, chasing, and attacking a big rattle snake. The snake was striking like crazy at the cat but it was just to fast. It would jump up just out of reach of the strike and go right after the snake.

I would not take the chance.
I also would not take the chance to leave a snake in my yard that COULD be poisonous.
If the snake is still there, try to identify if it is poisonous and have it removed.
There are wildlife rehabilitators who do this sort of thing.
Do a search under 'wildlife rehabilitator' on Google and find one in your state.
