I think it's because parents underestimate the natural and innate intelligence their kids have. Parents think their kids can't handle knowing about things like death, divorce, sex etc.
What kids want to know is the truth, then they can sort out their world and try to make sense of it with this new information. Lying is just confusing to kids, as they are clever enough to know stuff is going on, and they just want to know the truth.

Some parents lie to their children because they don't want you to make the same mistakes they made at your age. To protect you for some reason or you might be too young to handle the situation.

My husband and I were brutally honest with our kids. Now that they are grown, I wonder if it was always the right thing to do.
Most folks don't like the truth because it can hurt. Maybe it made my kids less compassionate, too.

You mean like Santa, the tooth fairy, how babies are made? its fun for children to believe in magical creatures like Santa, the Easter Bunny, etc., and what parent would want their child to know about sex at all? of course its not like someone can watch TV for five minutes before switching the channel because people looked like they were having sex on one show or something.

if you're talking about the stuff like santa and the toothfarie it's to give the kids something to look forward to and to build their imagination
but if your talking about stuff like "if you pick your nose ur brains will leak out" the that's for protection
if your talking about stuff like "do your chores or santa won't come this year" there's really no reason for that one, it's just plain mean
sure lying is lying and it's wrong but sometimes lying can be good

Do you mean about Santa? I think it is a fun experience for them, as for real issues, like death, I've always been honest with my kids, no, oh, he's just sleeping.
