RE:
Is It Safe to Microwave Food on Styrofoam?
I heard somewhere that it is unsafe to microwave food while it's sitting on styrofoam. I'm referring specifially to those dark pink or yellow trays that meat is packed in when you get it from the store. If you defrost the meat while it's sitting on one of those trays, is it true that...

You are probably OK doing this. Styrofoam, like many other plastics, does not absorb microwaves. Styrofoam's transition temperature is around 212 degs. F., So below this it should not melt. But then, why keep the meat or whatever in the all the blood or other juices it has been sitting in in the market?
Like all synthetics, plastics will have a tendency to revert to thier natural state (breakdown). Maybe you have observed a "plastic" smell to water left in a sealed plastic container for awhile.

Hello, Bryan.
Microwaving in Styrofoam containers may not be such a good idea. Such products are called polystyrene, and the monomers made from styrene may leach into the food from the heat. It is a possible animal carcinogen.

it's supposed to be safe... but i have my doubt about microwaving anything in styrofoam. it will melt if you microwave it for long enough. and i don't like the idea of eating non biodegradeable material. 30 years from now they'll probably say it causes cancer....

It may be safe, as in it won't kill you, but it is not a good idea to. You'd be much better to put the food onto a microwave safe glass dish.

Possibly true. But my grandparents did it, my parents did it, and I still do it. I think people are too paranoid lately. If the styrofoam melts, then you have a problem.

It is not safe because molecules of Styrofoam will slough off onto your food. Use microwave-safe cookware like pyrex.
