Siberian Huskies or Malamutes

Huskies are built for speed where as Malamutes are built for power.

Often sleds dogs are mutts, combinations of various breeds. In the north, a dog with a heavier coat is much more desirable ofcourse. We trained an Afghan hound and a Rhodesian Ridgeback to pull. Now, that was a sight!
Typically, huskies and Malamutes are the dog of choice. Prior to snow-mobiles, sled dogs were working dogs, considered beasts of burden and rarely a family pet.

Best sled dogs.... Alaskan Huskys - they are mixes of usually Siberian Huskys, perhaps some malemute, border collies fot endurance, I've even heard some have hound in them - it all depends on the breeder/ sled drivers wants - they want dogs with great endurance, a good running speed, and good coats to keep warm.

It depends on your goals in sledding.

If you simply want to go pleasure sledding, with a couple people on the sled for a nice ride though the woods, Malamutes are slower-paced but much stronger than Sibes. One or two Mals can easily pull one or two people on a sled for many miles.
If you want heavy duty work, pulling heavy weights, a team of Mals is the way to go.

If you want speed, a fast trip through the woods or to enter a race, then Sibes are the best sledding breed. You would want a team of at least 3 Sibes, though, probably more, for any long-distance running with more than one person on the sled.

Samoyeds are in between Mals and Sibes. Stronger than Sibes, faster than Mals. (Slower than Sibes, not as strong as Mals!)

The fastest sledders of all, though, the true racers, are the mixed-breeds called Alaskan Huskies. These dogs are, for example, a Mal bred to a greyhound, the pup from that litter bred to an Irish Setter, the pup from that litter bred to a Siberian, the pup from that litter bred to a Border Collie, the pup from that litter bred to a Mal. The idea is to get speed, speed, speed with some pulling instincts.

But the Alaskans aren't very strong! You need a large team to pull a small amount of weight. And they eat 3 - 5 times more than pure Sibes or Mals.

Depends on whether you are looking for speed or endurance, but the typical sled dogs are Alaskan Malamutes, Alaskan Huskies, and Siberian Huskies. I've know someone who uses Border Collies, though.

True sled dogs are "mutts" bred from huskies, malamutes and regional "mutt" breeds. If you were picking a specifc AKC breed though, Malamutes and Huskies are the typical ones.

If you're looking for speed with light loads, than Siberian Huskies.
If you're looking for a breed to pull heavier loads, Alaskan Malamutes.

I don't know much about Alaskan Huskies.. but a lot of mushers use them now and I've heard great things about them.
