To get a confirmed ticket, how much early an advance train reservation is recommended in China, by KCR intercity, in start January 2007, from HK to Shanghai ? Kindly mention the days. I'm planning to get the reservation done personally, when I reach HK ie. 2 - 3 days before travelling, but I am doubtful if I will get the reservation confirmed or not !
Please advise. Thanks

Generally, it's 3 days. Sometimes you can try to get one 5 days ahead, but that's usually only around major holidays. I recommend hard or soft sleeper, if you can get it. Soft seat is the next best ticket and hard seat sucks. This is where the standing room ticket holders stand and it can be packed. Also, you have fast trains and slow trains. Try to get the fastest one possible should you get stuck in the hard seat section. Personally, I don't like the train. I prefer the long distance bus. There are less people, many times it's faster, and sometimes the seats recline. They do make sleeper buses for overnight trips, but the bunks aren't for tall people. Just remember there are options other than the train if you can't get a ticket.
