Yes you can. :P
The safest "dye" would be watered down jello powder. Use cherry, or strawberry. Leave in the coat for a few minutes and then rinse off with water. Some color will stay in the coat.
I am a pet rat owner and many people have dyed their white rats using this method.
You can even make your critter look like a bumble bee by doing this.

Animals will lick themselves or chew fur off if they don't like the smell, which no matter what type of dye you use, a hamster will not. It could be deadly to the hamster as well as painful if the dye is acidic and/or gets in its eyes.
If you must try dying it, which I don't recommend, dab a little food coloring in pink on a small portion of fur on its back. If you get no reaction in a few days - no self-mutilation or scabbing - you could try it. Don't use human hair dye or color spray.

The thing you need to remember is to make sure that whatever you use could also be ingested by the hamster without harm. Because of this, I would only use Kool-Aid if I were you. Make a very concentrated solution (like instead of a packet in a gallon of water, a packet in a cup of water).
Be very very careful that you don't get anything in his eyes as it may cause irritation, and if you have any doubts as to whether he will respond well to the whole ordeal, don't do it.

You can also boil him dark violet.
Hey, this is an animal you are talking about, not a canvas.
If you want to paint a living being you should buy yourself a slave!!!

LOL, sure you can use food coloring. Otherwise you will kill it. I would put food coloring on babies before separating them, not there entire bodies however....
