Before the use of Microchips, all service dogs were tattooed..they did it on the inside of the ear..You can buy a 'stamp' that does it in one press of a gadget that looks like funny pliers. they used to have booths at dog shows, where you could get your dog tattooed and registered with a lost dog prevention organization.. they just did it right there at the show..they usually used the digits of your social security number..

Our dogs are tattooed and registered with the National Dog Registry. In the event that any of them should ever run away, the tattoo can be used to help ID the dog and hopefully they'll be returned home safely. Our dogs are also micro chipped and registered for the same reason.
There is no need to tattoo a dog or any other animal for any other reason other than to ID them in the event they become lost. BTW: a tattoo or a micro chip is useless unless it is registered in the appropriate registry. Piercing a dog is just plain silly.

As a vet tech I tattooed dogs and cats on their bellies to show they were spayed or neutered, But they were sedated at the time. Racing greyhounds have ear tattoos for ID. So yes you can tattoo a dog but only under humane conditions and following local laws for same.

I hope you don't mean getting a dog tattooed like stupid people do? Ear piercing dogs....yikes! Say it isn't so!
There were valid reasons to have a dog tattooed; it served to identify it as yours, in case of loss or theft. It consisted of numbers, and was placed on the inside of the left hind-quarter. I had it done to my pup, because he was coming from Germany.
Now they use microchips.
By chance, do you pass the time by cutting the whiskers off cats, or pulling out their nails?
Get professional help, or get a life.

Aside from the aforementioned identification tattoo on the inner ear, there is no good reason to tattoo your pet.
Your dog is your pet, your friend, your protector and companion. He is NOT a Barbie doll, GI Joe or Mr. Potato Head that you can customize to your taste. It is cruel, unneccessary and just a reflection of your own selfish ego.

Tatooing for cosmetic reasons would be cruel. Also piercing dogs is imo cruel. I know people do it, at least the piercing. I know some people tatoo dogs with a social security number for I.D. but now there are other more effective ways to I.D. a dog.
I prefer tags, even though they can come off.
For your dog, tatooing would be painful and depending on what you had in mind, could cause complications that could be serious.
I understand how you are thinking it could be cool but really it isn't because the dog will suffer.

The import German Shepherds are tatooed. If you want to show a Shepherd with USA (schutzhund) the dog needs to be tatooed. With a dog like this, we like to tatoo as a pup and we use ear clamp tattoer's that you clamp the ear and then put the ink on. If you are doing this for identification purposes, I suggest that you get your dog microchipped.

you can tattoo a dog as a replacement for a dog tag so when they get lost people can just look for the tattoo on the dog

You can have the inside of the dogs ear tattoo for identifiction reasons only. There really isn't any other reason to have it done. A vet can do it for you at a reasonable rate very quickly. GOOD LUCK!
