.
Windows ME is old DOS based technology.
Windows XP it entirely different, as it is based on NT technology...
there are no "UPgrades actually.

You will need to totally get rid of ME
then install Windows XP as your new Operating System. During installation, select NTFS
(NewTechnologyFileSystem)
as your File System.

You will be thrilled with the difference.
After installation, go to MS downloads
and get the latest download SP2

Do NOT download Internet Explorer 7
It is horridly plagued with bugs still...wait a year.

DO DOWNLOAD Internet Explorer 6 with
fixes Sp2. Good smooth running tool.

buy the upgrade disc, insert it while windows is running and follow the steps, usually you won't loose data but back up to be sure.

I prefer clean installs instead of operating systems upgrades. to do this, back up your data, pop in the windows xp disc and restart and it should say press any key to boot to cd, follow those directions and it should wipe your hard drive clean first. If you don't get the press any key to boot to cd... you need to go into your BIOS and change the boot sequence to boot from CD ROM first.

If you want to do an upgrade then boot into ME and inser the CD. If you don't have ME on it anymore then boot the PC to the XP CD and follow the instructions on the screen. If you don't know how to boot to the CD here is a link: http://www.computerhope.com/issues/ch000217.htm
