Take the tail gate off or buy a net to replace the tail gate. There are also tail gates which look like the brush guards for the front of trucks. By doing any of these things you reduce the wind drag that the tail gate causes. You can buy at truck stuff.com or at a local four wheel supply store near you.

Well, your not driving a vehicle that can get very good mileage.
What can you do to maximize your mileage?
1) Clean Air Filter
2) Tires at Max Pressure.
3.) Remove tailgate, or leave it down or put one of those web strap tailgates in place of the solid metal one.
4) If your 1500 can be left in 2 wheel drive without the front hubs being locked, that will help.
5) Change all oils, engine, transmission and differential oils to synthetic. Amsoil Oil is the best and makes all the oils you need, you will need to find a dealer in your area or go on-line and become a preferred customer.
6) Make sure your spark plugs are clean and gaped correctly and your timing is right.
7) Idling is a mileage killer, no more drive thrus, no jack rabbit starts, and anticipate the traffic lights! More fuel can be saved by not running up the the lights only to jam on the breaks than people realize. Anticipate and coast!

Change the stock air filter to a K&N model to fit your truck. This increases air flow and helps out a little on fuel milage. Contrary to what people think about removing the tail-gate, it actually doesn't help by removing it. With the tailgate on, there is a pocket of air that is created behind the cab that helps direct air flow over the tailgate so there is little or no drag in normal driving conditions. It's not worth removing. If you want to spend some dough, it might be worth looking into an aftermarket exaust too. An exaust with less restriction will not only help in fuel milage, it will also increase horsepower! Good luck!

Your gonna get crappy gas mileage no matter what, you drive a dodge (so do I, I have 2 of them) dodge is notorious for gas guzzling engines. All you can do is keep up on your basic maintenance. Don't listen to the take the tail gate off, that myth was busted on myth busters on the discovery channel.

Its a truck. They dont get very good gas milage. As for removing/lowering the tailgate, its a bunch of bull.same gas milage either way. I have made numerous trips cross country with my 98 ram 4x4 it just doesnt matter.I have picked up a couple mpg by adding a k@n filter, dropping injector sizes, f#$king with the computer, ect but it still only gets mid to high teens. my suggestion...buy a feista

if you have off road tires, when you replace them, get a more street oriented tire, and pump it up to the maximum pressure for that tire.

If you are willing to climb underneath, and you don't need the 4x4, remove the prop shaft from the t case to the front diff

Make sure it has good plug wires/ plugs and air filther
Other than that, not much.

all 4x4's are jacked up for ground clearance, and the waste lots of energy spinning the drive shafts that go to the front wheels
