Once you have the clip on the slide and it is highlighted go to the menu bar and to the Slide Show Menu. From the list select Custom Animation. From the boxes that now come up make sure that the Media clip in the top left window of that box is highlighted and select it in the lower pane below it. Then Click on the "Multi-media" tab - this is where you need to select a few other options - if you have any other animation select the various options there - for example you need to click the radio button that says "Continue Slide show" or something like that - next now this is very important if the music is shorter than the slide show you need to select the button marked "More Options" this gives an option by way of a check box to "Play until stopped" - this means that the music will keep repeating until you have stopped the slide show.

I hope this helps - also worth considering if you want your slide show to keep repeating i.e. playing over and over just like in a booth advertising things then you need to go to the "Set Up Show also in the Slide Show Menu and select the option to "Loop continuously - this is near the lower left of the small window.

These instructions will work with PowerPoint 2000 with no problems - I am not sure about 2003

You can. In PPT 2003 anyway. Right click on the inserted music.

Go for custom animation (i know not where you'd think)

Now in the custom animation go to effect options. Change the stop playing to after x number of slides.

Works fine.

Try this:
Display the slide to which you want to add music or sound effects.
On the Insert menu, point to Movies and Sounds, and then do one of the following:
Insert a sound file

Click Sound from File, locate the folder that contains the file that you want, and then double-click the file.
Insert a sound clip from Clip Organizer

Click Sound from Clip Organizer, scroll to find the clip that you want, and then click it to add it to the slide.
Note To search for clips in the Clip Organizer, fill in the Search for box, and then click Go. To get more information about finding the clip that you want, including details about finding files by using wildcard characters and about adding your own clips to the Clip Organizer, click Tips for finding clips at the bottom of the task pane.

Double-click the sound file that you want to insert.
When a message is displayed, do one of the following:
To play the music or sound automatically when you go to the slide, click Automatically.
To play the music or sound only when you click the sound icon , click When Clicked.
To adjust the settings for when the sound file stops, click the sound icon , right-click, and then click Custom Animation.
In the Custom Animation task pane, click the arrow on the selected item in the Custom Animation list, and then click Effect Options.
On the Effect tab, under Stop playing, do one of the following:
To stop the sound file on mouse-click of this slide, select On click (the default).
To stop the sound file after this slide, select After current slide.
To keep the sound file playing for several slides, select After, and then set the total number of slides the file should play on.

yes, once you put the music on the little icon you double click it. There should be a square that you check to play the music continously.
