A few simple toys are to put anything in a water or soda bottle and super glue the lid on. There are all kinds of things you can use. Beads make a real neat noise for a baby. If you use light Karo syrup the items will flow from one end of the bottle to the other slowly. Hair gel is real neat because the stuff that you put in with it suspends in the hair gel. There are an endles amount of things you can put in the bottles.
To find more things type in the words "enrichment toy" to your search engine; This is the term teachers use for homemade toys

I don't know if you have specific guidelines to follow, but my husband took a whole bunch of keyrings (you can buy just the ring part in packs at a hardware store) and linked them all onto one big one. It is a toy my 11 month old and 2 1/2 year old fight over. It's not a choking hazard, so it's a great toy for any age.

Maybe you can use this idea for something for your project. Good luck!

best toy i ever made i made for a final project in an infant/toddler class and ultimately became one of my youngest daughters favorite things even today(shes now 18yrs old and it was one of the first things she wanted to display at her graduation party) It is a special photo book of her life up to about age 18mos, but could have been added to.

I started with a simple photo album (you can get them with a variety of pictures on the front)

then choose several pictures of my child at various ages and doing a variety of activities with all members of our family and at several places in our town.

then collected pictures of babies, toys, food, animals, etc from magazines and newspapers, to highlight some of the pages

then began with pages of her birth photos and her family with and without her and made sure to label them in easy to read signs to help with word recognition
the next pages included places where our family liked to go (the zoo, the park, the beach, the fair)
and inbetween there were pages of babies, food and toys labeled (word recognition) and ever a few pages with colors, and numbers were included
and at the very end of the book is a picture of her getting ready for bed.

this book has been a lifesaver for her as she has used it a variety of classroom presentations and in several demonstrations of how far she has come in life but it also helped her to know her family loves her and has always taken care of her

the project earned me an "A+" and i have used it myself in several demonstrations(i was a teacher for over 20 yrs) and have had several parents, teachers, and other people say its a great idea and they have made albums of their own too.
