The reason is the Emergency Room does not ask for payment when services are rendered, a clinic does. But the flip side of that is a clinic visit might be $50.- $75 where an ER visit will be at least $300. But most of them don't pay anyway.

Around here we are told to go to emergency if we dont have a doctor. There is a severe doctor shortage in many areas and thus doctors that are there are not accepting more patients. So, you see people getting their annual physical in emergency and other minor things.

Other people may not "look" like they have an emergency, but they do have one. Once when I had a broken wrist, I had people making comments to me that I shouldnt be there. I was in shock at the point so I wasnt crying in pain, but the break was bad enough it had to be reset.

We do have people here who "say" they have chest pains and go to the hospital just so they can get air ambulanced to the city, get checked out and then go shopping. That is their poor way of using government money to get out where they live and come here. (very cynical, but true)

1.No two people can determine what classifies as emergent.
2. It is hard to get an appointment to see a physician. It can take as long as 3 weeks or more to get in.
3. Insurance and paying up front also hinders people from seeking a regular physician. It is against the law to refuse medical care in the emergency room
4. Frequently the homeless figure out they can come in and complain of chest pain and must spend the night. they will get food and shelter. They are frequently elderly.
5 the population has outgrown the availability of affordable health care through regular avenues.

They do it because a lot of people is unemployed and does not have medical insurance so this is their only source to the doctors. And Most people will categorize a emergency differently than other people.

My pt and doctor jumped on me for not going to the E.R when I tripped and broke and torn tendons in my foot. I waited till the week day too call the doctor. When asked why I did not go to the E.R. I told them I save the E.R for emergency. I was not dieing or having a heart attack. Stupid for me to go in. Put they considered it an Emergency. So there you go.

The most common answer I hear is that they can't get an apt. to see the Dr. for weeks. Some patients think a stubbed toe is call for an emergency department visit while others sit at home with chest pain thinking, "It'll pass." Different views.......

Some people like waiting around in a big waiting room for 8 hours. It's like being a mall walker, but you don't have to walk! Or, they are hypochondriacs, or don't know what they have. I'd just go to a MediHelp or something, at least the wait is shorter!
