The only thing wrong with weed, is that it is illegal!

Nearly all of the above answers are completely wrong.

To answer your question about side effects, it may cause reddened eyes, increased hunger, and a heightened sense of humor in addition to short term memory problems. None of these are serious problems in most cases.

As for why it is taboo -- that is the result of ignorance and bigotry. Marijuana was originally outlawed for two reasons. In the southwestern states it was outlawed because of racial prejudice against Mexican immigrants. In the northeastern states it was outlawed because of the fear that heroin addiction would lead to the use of marijuana -- exactly the opposite of the modern "gateway" myth. See http://druglibrary.org/schaffer/Library/mj_outlawed.htm

For the side effects, see the Major Studies of Drugs and Drug Policy at http://druglibrary.org/schaffer There is a lot of reading there but the sum of it is that marijuana doesn't have many (if any) real harmful effects for the vast majority of the people who use it. The collection includes the largest studies ever done by the governments of the US, the UK, Canada, and Australia, so there is no better research available anywhere.

For those who will talk about lung cancer -- the latest news from Dr. Donald Tashkin (the leading authority on that topic) is that marijuana smokers actually have a LOWER incidence of lung cancer than everyone else. This is believed to be due to the fact that marijuana has anti-tumor properties. It is known to kill various kinds of cancer tumors.

Cannabis (weed) effects vary from person to person.

The effect can vary according to the mood or atmosphere in which it is used. The immediate effects of cannabis can last approximately two to three hours and may include:
A feeling of relaxation and sense of wellbeing
Reduced concentration
Decreased coordination
Distorted perceptions of time, space and distance
Increased heart rate
Drowsiness
Increased appetite
Increased talkativeness
Reddened eyes
Impaired driving ability.

Larger doses or stronger forms of cannabis can exacerbate these effects and result in other effects such as:
Confusion
Restlessness
Feelings of excitement
Hallucinations
Anxiety or panic
Detachment from reality
Paranoia
Nausea.

ahhhh... i forgot but i knew the answer.... I think the side effects to the the chemical in weeds, do effect different people differently, and short term memory loss can be one of them. Impotence and degrading your sexual drive can be another, excessive heart rate, or low heart rate can be a side effect. Each person is different and the their bodies react differently to any drug. It has been shown by many studies over the years that weed on a whole , to the masses is harmful to many of them, due to simple dogma of not caring and being simply out of touch with your senses for a period of time. Not good in a world where all your senses are needed to survive.

If the weed has been dusted with "Angel dust" - a halucinagenic, then there are lots of very colorful side effects. If the crop was sprayed with a herbicide such as Paraquat, then it becomes not only very toxic but also highly carcinogenic. There is something to your position, but all psychoactive drugs (like weed) have long term effects on the brain, & none of them are pretty. You've only got one brain - when it's toast, you'r done for life.

AVOID DRUG USE - YOU'LL BE GLAD YOU DID !

I didnt try weed till I was 50 believe this or not.I wasnt impressed at all. At the time I was drinking wine and got spaced out. Made my mouth dry for sure. And made me have the munchies. Just as well to stay clear of that stuff. Not worth it in my book.

that is indeed why its taboo. some side effects are pain relief, stress relief, and nausea relief. However withdrawal after long time use has the opposite effects, jitteriness, enhanced pain, coughing. Like any other inhaled substance it can do damage to lung tissue and can exasperate asthma( which is why I don't smoke it)
