I think it's ridiculous. People spending a fortune on mixed breed mutts that they could find in a shelter instead...

Sigh...what people do in the name of money...

teacup dogs, mini dogs, breed crosses, etc.

It is really sad what happens to these dogs when the new owners realize that they are not what they were told they were...like you said about the barking, shedding, etc....

I'm with you. I think it's silly to pay hundreds and even thousands of dollars for a designer "breed" (read: crossbreed) when many beautiful, wonderful pets are put to sleep in shelters every day. Instead of buying a dog for snob value, why not adopt a terrific shelter pet?

I also have a real problem with irresponsible breeders who are out to make a buck without consideration of what may happen to the puppies. It's hard enough to get two bloodlines of the same breed to nick. But when you're talking two separate breeds, the potential for health and temperament flaws goes through the roof. Instead of one set of breed related issues, now you have two.

Put the money-grubbing breeders of designer dogs out of business -- adopt a shelter dog, save a life, and gain a wonderful companion!

Here's more thought than the typical designer breeder puts into his breeding program (I'll use the Cockapoo as an example):
A Cockapoo is a cross between a Cocker Spaniel and a Poodle.
There are 3 varieties of Cocker Spaniel: Black, ASCOB and Parti-Colored. There are also three different kinds of poodle: Standard, Miniature and Toy (each is recognized as a distinct breed). If you cross a Standard Poodle with a Black Cocker, will you get the same type of dog as a Miniature Poodle crossed with a Parti-Colored Cocker? Now assume that some of the puppies in the litter resemble the sire better, and some resemble the dam better. Which pup is the prototypical Cockapoo? Suppose the breeder down the street crosses a different variety Cocker with a different type of Poodle. Will his puppies resemble the first cross mentioned? Suppose you cross a Cockapoo with a Poodle. Do you still get a Cockapoo? Suppose the first breeder in this example crosses his Cockapoo with the breeder down the street's Cockapoo. How much will the pups change? I could go on with this, but I think you get the point. We can also do this with Labradoodles, Puggles, Yorkiepoos etc etc.

The saddest part of this is the breeder of the pure bred dog ... seeing his line tainted by folks who intentionally use one of his pups to make mongrels that probably will make more money than he ever did for his pedigreed dog.

I think its absolutely pathetic that some idiotic people pay literally thousands of dollars to get a mixed-breed dog...especially when there are dozens of equally healthy, trainable, whatever it is that draws them to the mix, sitting in their local animal shelter. And available for less than $100, including spaying/neutering!

I especially HATE the term being tossed around now, HYBRID. Hybrid vigor, special hybrid dogs...sorry, but a hybrid is a mixture of two seperate ANIMALS, not simply two breeds within a species. Like a horse and donkey create a hybrid...mule.

But hybrid just sounds SO cool to these designer-craving idiots. (shudder!)

A person I know got a 'designer' Cocker Poodle mix...from the pet store. When it was a pup, I argued with this person about the fact that, a) it came from a pet store...b) just because it has Poodle in it doesn't mean it won't shed...c) there is NO such thing as hybrid vigor, that the pup was just as susceptible to inherited diseases as any purebred.

The dog sheds. Lightly, but she definitely leaves hair behind unless she is shaved every month. And she had to have her patella repaired...to the tune of $1,500.

Some hybrid vigor!

And, no, as much as I wanted say, TOLD YOU SO, I was sweet when the person told me I had been right. The person is now letting all her friends know of the fallacy of all the stuff the pet store people claimed was the case with mixed-breeds.

What is sadder is the CRAP the "breeders" tell them and that they think it is TRUE!!!!!!!!!! Puggles DON'T shed or bark. ALL Poodle mutts DO NOT SHED. Everytime you cross two breeds you "get the best of both". They are smarter, healthier, stronger, and BETTER!!!!!! And people buy it hook, line, and sinker!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! And they pay THROUGH THE NOSE FOR IT!!!!!!!!!!!!

The teacup thing is a whole other story!!! People think it is great to pay MORE for an UNDERSIZED puppy that is going to have all kinds of problems. They do not care that MANY of these puppies die before they are sold, and more die after. They do not care that because of breeding them soo small, they are subjecting them to a life of complications!!!!!!!!!!!! Why support that kind of breeding???????????

I work at a shelter and see these come in all the time!! It is a real shocker when the Puggle sheds and runs away all the time and HOWLS all night! So, they dump it at the shelter and say it was "too Beagle like" and they don't like Beagles. But they were SURE they would love a PUGGLE!!!

And teacup ANYTHINGS do POORLY at the shelter!!! And rarely are they housetrained, so who wants to adopt them????

I think it's stupid too.
Consider that all these new puppies are adding to the pet overpopulation problem. Either because people buy one of them and don't rescue one from a shelter, or they will wind up in a shelter once the puppy cuteness wears off and people realize that no matter how cute the new "designer" name is, it still needs to be house broken and obedience trained.
People can be so dumb.

The poodle lab mixes there was a breeder in the city over the mountain who gave all her dogs to the pound for she wanted out of it...one can find these mixes at the pound and not have to pay $1000 bucks for them.
It was on our news...

I think it's pretty ridiculous too. Just the other day, I saw a BYB's page making a crapload of these designer breeds, and the most ridiculous thing I saw was Miniature Saint Bernards.

I think anyone that wants to spend 2,000 dollars on dogs are crazy. You could just go to your local shelter and get a sweet little guy that will love you even more because you saved him from the shelter for about $75. I got my Purebred Shih-Tzu from the shelter and was only $75.

Do you mean like the "teacup" dogs? I think it's sad that people do stuff like that. Very sad. Most end up in shelters anyway once the new owner can't handle the health issues.

I disagree with this one cause we owned 2 Yorkie/min pin mixes and they were the best dogs that we ever owned,,, they were very smart and everyone wanted one of them even when they were full grown adult cause they were so small and cute,,, they were small like the yorkie and had a personality of a min pin,,, they werent afraid of anything and easy to train,,, and if i could find another one then i would get one,,,
