Your 1973 bug came with a 1600cc, dual port engine. The engine case is basicaly the same on all VW vehicles that have a 1600 motor. Different models for example the bus(type 2 up to 1971),the square back, and the fast back (type 3) came with the basic 1600 engine case with their modifications to fit their characteristics. Except for type 3 starters, you can put any 12volt VW starter in your bug. If you want the exact type, take the old one out and bring it with you to the parts store ,they will want an exchange any way. Stick with only genuine Bosch or VW parts. Anything else and you are asking for trouble.
I dont know where you are,but if you can find a BAP/GEON auto parts store, thats your best bet for VW or any European built car. Important!!!... Put white grease on the starter shaft before installing the new starter.

While it would have come originally from the factory with a 1600cc, that doesn't not mean it still has that motor or that it hasn't been rebuilt into a larger motor. So, unless zskip62 has personnel knowledge about your car, he's just making guesses. As well there is no engine data plate, so no since looking for one. A more useful number would have been the block number, which if it has one (aftermarket cases don't) will be stamped into the block. It's probably stamped under the generator pedestal, but it could be else where if the engine is from a type 3 or 4. Email me if you want help finding it and decoding it. As well in 73 the only engine sold in the US was the 1600cc, but smaller sizes where common in other markets.

Questions:
Is it a manual?
If so this is what your probably looking for:

Pretty much, any VW shop is going to have it in stock. There are cheaper brands, but in my experience stick with Bosch a lot of that of other brands are junk. You can check the big chain stores like NAPA, Autozone, Pepboys, etc but usually they know nothing about classic VW and will sell you the wrong part or a very low quality one, but that's just my experience. Also to make sure your getting the right one, you can all ways check the part number on the one currently in it.

Check out this for local shops:

The part link above will probably be the cheapest around, but I can recommend some better shops if you want that will be willing to talk to you over the phone to make sure you get what you need.

All so if you need to save cash there is all ways the chance your current one can be fix or you can pick up a good used one.

Good Luck

It is a 1600 cc most likely if it is the original motor. You can take off the starter or have a friend take it off for you it is simple it only has two bolts to loosen and disconnect the battery wire. Then take it in to a parts place for foreign cars and they will be able to match it up and you will be on your way! Good luck I used to work on them a long time ago I liked the little cars.

If it's a north american model it's a 1600cc or 1.6 litre engine.
If an European model it's a 1300cc or 1.3 litre engine.

In any account. It's definitely 12volt and all standard transmission 12 volt starters are the same. automatic transmission cars use a different starter.
If you get an automatic starter and put it in a standard, your car will start much better as well.
I use an auto starter in my standard trans car and it works great.

Unfortunately, that can't be ascertained from the VIN on pre-1978 model year cars. There should be a data plate with the engine code on it. That could be up under the hood, in the rear on the firewall, or on the rear floorboards under the back seat near the battery. The parts shop can identify the engine from that code and fix you up with the right battery.

All of that said, and I may well be wrong on this, but I believe the 73 Beetle only came with one engine, a 1.6 liter (1585cc) model.
