Especially when we are 'educated' with religion rather than common sense - it must take some rational thinking to go against the mythical fairy tales. The free-thinking atheists/agnostics are totally aware of the bible-version of events. But they've questioned rather than been brainwashed. Does this make them 'cleverer' than the god-botherers?

i saw a website recently that showed a direct statistical correlation between religious belief and lower IQ. Forgot to bookmark it, but I'm sure you can find it in a search engine.

Of course atheism is more intellectually based that religion. There is not a jot of evidence to support any religious beliefs. Those simple folk who believe in God are just as misguided as those people (and yes they do exist) who believe in Father Christmas.

It is no coincidence that those countries with the highest proportion of the population who are religious believers are also those countries which comprise the most impoverished and badly educated populations. Just look at South America and the Middle East.

Out of all the religions that have ever existed the only one which made the slightest sense were the sun worshippers. Without the sun we would not exist. All other religions are complete garbage and have only led to war, persecution and the stifling of scientific progress.

Of course atheists are more intellectual. Having just read Charles Nicholl's excellent book 'The Reckoning' which examines the murder of the playright Christopher Marlowe because of his atheist beliefs it can be clearly seen that there is much more evidence for the non-existence of god than there is for his existence. Unfortunately, most people do not have the intellectual capacity to question religion they just accept what they are told.

Er.. um.. no.

Yes, quite a few atheists/ agnostics are such because they have considered the whole 'is there a God' thing, have read up about it and have come to a considered opinion.

But I don't think that ALL atheists/ agnostics have done that, any more than ALL believers are simply going along with what their parents etc believed.

I'm sure there are blindly 'believing' atheists/ agnostics, just as there are believers out there who think for themselves.

I think you're assuming that atheism/ agnosticism is the logical conclusion so anyone that thinks for themselves will have to end up thinking that way. But people are more complex than that. It's what makes the world so interesting I think.

How do you know that atheists and agnostics are free thinking? Did they really look at the evidence and come to their own conclusion or were they taught to believe what they believe. I say this because I used to be agnostic and believe in evolution. I admit I considered myself agnostic through my own conclusions, but my belief in evolution was based on what others told me. I only began researching evolution after I began to learn about creation. So far, I've not come across one evolutionary argument that cannot be countered. These are my own thoughts and no other Bible students that I know look at it quite the same way I do.

No. There are many Christians who have also questioned, and came to their beliefs that way. I'm one of them, thank you.

And if one thinks that only atheists or agnostics are intelligent, perhaps they would be best served to take a look at this list:
At the site below one can see a list of some of the most famous scientists throughout history, and their religious beliefs:
http://www.adherents.com/people/100_scientists.html
At the site below, one can see a list of current theistic scientists:

I think that about covers it. But I know of more.

Yes, it is considered that by the athiests and agnostics.

What concerns me the most is since this site specifies religion and spirituality, why do athiests and agnostics even bother to log on to this site.

The gnostics question and Christians search. No one considers any one thing more clever. It is not about being clever. It is about faith.

doesnt make us cleverer, steven hawking is rated as the cleverest man alive and he believes in god, so did albert einstein. it just means that we are a bit more cynical and find it difficult to believe in god when we see proof that god isnt real.everyone has their opinions, and its not a matter of intelligence, more a matter of faith
i think that saying atheists/agnostics are cleverer than theists is just asking for trouble.

I'm an atheist, but f**k me if I understand what you're talking about! I think everyone is entitled to believe in whatever they choose, and so called 'intellectuals' can believe in whatever they choose as well. Religion has nothing to do with intelligence, its a matter of belief and faith. I do not claim to be intellectually superior to anyone because I am an atheist, neither do I expect anyone who as a faith to claim to be intellectually superior. Its a matter of faith not intelligence.

lol ... to be Seinfeldian, you are an 'anti-theite'. Your question betrays a HUGE bigotry and ignorance of people who believe in God.

There are many many many theists who wrestle intellectually with the mysteries of their faith. To them it is a question that is constantly being battled, settled, rediscovered and brought to crisis over.

On the other hand, atheists have a very simplistic view - 'there is no God' - and continue on in life for years with no major intellectual expansion of their view.

So you see, perhaps you have not 'considered' the relative 'intellectual' merits of both positions.

Good luck.

Sad in a way if you get down to the nitty gritty of things
Who states that just because you CHOSE to believe that you are a total moron

I could in return state that just because you do not believe that you in turn are a moron
but to result into name calling is so childish

would you not agree

I think they are seeing only part of a very big picture. We humans always try to wrap our little pea brains around things we cannot begin to fathom- like God's wisdom and love. We have wonderful capabilities, as humans, but when you are using your brain, that is only part of you. Spirituality is not tangible, but it still exists. It doesn't make you less clever to believe.
