After World War 2 where the US, England, France, and Russia kicked Germany's butt, they divided the county into two halves - east and west. One little twist to this is that the city of Berlin itself was also divided into east and west. West Berlin was like this little island of democracy in the middle of communist East Germany. Anyway the Russians decided one day to put a wall around Berlin and not allow people or supplies to go in or out. So in order to keep the west Berliners from starving to deat, the US gathered every cargo airplane it could find and flew food and supplies into the city constantly. It was all very tnse because basically the planes were flying over "enemy territory" (there was no declared war but we were int he beginnings of the cold war) and the Russians could have taken these flights as an act of war and shot them down, thus starting WW III and possibly nuclear conflict. IN the end, the Russians backed down and allowed supplies to be ground transported in and out of Berlin.

I hope this helps.

The only thing I would change from the first responder is the use of the word "wall". The Russians didn't build the Berlin Wall until 1961. The airlift occured in 1948 and 1949.
