Now, I'm slowly but surely trying to read through the Bible; and I'm in Genesis right now. I just got done reading a little while ago and I'm up to ch. 50.

After reading, I thought of a question, becuase I notice several times the Bible mentions that somebody that got old and tired of this life "gave up the ghost". Not by shooting themselves, or overdosing or anything the like;but they just decided they were done living and gave up their spirit, thus they died.

How (assuming possible) does someone "give up the ghost"?Do we actually have the power and authority to do such thing?

Example I just read about at the end of chapter 49 was Jacob\Isreal who was about 130 or a 140 something; after he saw his son that was sold into slavery (Joeseph who was then a king) Jacob decided he was ready to die.

Possible to "give up the ghost"? Or not?

LOL good luck with it then. I had a read of the bible and soon got confused and bored with it. A few chapters was more than enough for me. I gave up the ghost on that.

of JohnThe term 'giving up the ghost' is a "WORD PICTURE" for simply Dying!

God uses many Word Pictures to get the mind-set across.

PERHAPS, if you have not read the Bible before, perhaps you could read the Gospel of John. Identify who Jesus said He was, and What he Claimed?

Thanks, RR

People can certainly lose the will to live. My father-in-law did it. It has nothing to do with ghosts or spirits or the soul though.

To give up the ghost is to lay down and die naturally. It was referred to as giving up the ghost.

Bible dictionary defination of Give up the ghost-A primitive root; to breathe out, that is, (by implication) expire: - die, be dead, give up the ghost, perish.
