to understand the new testament we need the old testament, without the old covenant we would not understand the new covenant, we wouldn't realise how jesus perfected the old laws and ways with his suffering and crucifixion. jesus quotes from the old testament on numerous occasions, we would not understand his message if we had no knowledge of where and why he qouted the specific qoutes. these are a few of the reasons why we need the old testament aswell. read all of the old testament but realise that jesus accomplished the word of the prophets from the old testament, that is why we know he is who he says he is, he also perfected the old covenant and brought us into a new covenant, this means that things such as dietry laws no longer apply to us and the ten commandments were made more perfect with our savior.

The Whole bible is relavant so yes to understand what God wants you to do you must search the whole bible. If God only wanted us to read 1 part of the bible would not He have put the Word of God here in vain. When people say that the old testament does not matter there saying that God is a vain God and His word means nothing, Think about it, you can find whats in the old testament in the new testament.

Not to me, but that is my opinion. The O.T. gave us a historical account of the Hebrews progression into acceptance of One God. We usually combine the old and new when we do Bible study. The things that were considered to be changed were mentioned by Jesus in the NT so it is history and good for informational purposes, such as Proverbs, and poetry such as Psalms. Also Prophets such as Isaiah.

There are some denominations who feel that the OT should be ignored because Jesus changed it . We have a choice of denominations, so, (as Ellen De Generes says) anyway....

the old testament has many good lessons to be learned from it, but at the same time we shouldn't practice those old laws of the land.
