Lack of emotion.
Let's call it a type of response to something. You can respond emotionally, to different degrees, or you can respond without emotion, with apathy.

It may be, but I would characterize it as being closer to the absence of emotion with respect to a particular person, topic, or thing, as opposed to the absence of emotion with respect to everyone and everything.
"Pathy" is classical Greek for "feeling," as in "sympathy" (when you feel for someone without necessarily sharing the emotion he or she is feeling) or "empathy" (when you feel with someone, as if you'd stepped into his or her shoes and shared the same feeling), or "antipathy" (when you feel hostility to someone or something).
The "a" at the beginning of an English language word with a classical Greek language root (which would include apathy) signifies the absence of something. Amoral differs from immoral as the absence of morals differs from having the wrong morals.
Similarly, we all know the meanings of "sexual," "heterosexual," homosexual," and "bisexual." "Asexual" connotes the absence of sexuality or sexual desire or feeling.
"Apathy," then, would seem to be the absence of feeling.
